On Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres will face off in a Fourth of July matchup out West. The highlight of this game will be the fact that Shohei Ohtani is pitching for the Angels against one of the more dangerous lineups in all of baseball. But Padres starter Joe Musgrove will be out to prove that he is deserving of some of the attention that will undoubtedly be paid to Ohtani on Tuesday.
The Los Angeles Angels come into Tuesday evening having lost their series opener to the San Diego Padres. In that game, the Angels gave up 10 runs, as they could not compete with the potent offense of their hosts. In this contest, the Angels send Shohei Ohtani to the mound, as they look to get a much-needed win against a West coast foe to help their cause in the AL West race.
This season, Ohtani is 7-3 with a 3.02 ERA, but June was a mixed bag for the presumptive favorite in the AL MVP race. Ohtani went 2-2 in the month of June, alternating wins and losses in the four decisions that he did take during the month. The question for Ohtani will be whether July will be a better month than June, or if he will continue to alternate between wins and losses by losing this contest.
No matter how Ohtani pitches in this game, the Angels are going to need their bats to be better if they want any shot at winning this contest. Los Angeles has been held to five or fewer runs in four straight games, and they have been held under that five-run mark in three of those last four outings. No matter who is on the mound for the Angels right now, more runs will be the recipe for their success.
The San Diego Padres find themselves in a rather distant fourth place in the NL West standings coming into Tuesday night. But that doesn’t mean that the Padres are incapable of providing some offensive fireworks of their own on the Fourth of July. Coming off of a 10-run outburst on Monday night against the Angels, San Diego will look for a second straight massive offensive showing here.
San Diego’s potency offensively was on full display on Monday, as Xander Bogaerts set the tone with a three-run home run in the first inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. added three RBI of his own to put the game well out of reach late. Something similar may be needed from both of those San Diego stars if the Padres are going to get Ohtani out of this game and get into the inconsistent bullpen of the Angels once again.
No matter how the Padres perform offensively in this game, they should have a chance to be competitive with Joe Musgrove on the mound. Musgrove enters this game with a 6-2 record on the season and a 3.80 ERA on the year as well. He has allowed two or fewer earned runs in three straight starts, and he could steal the show on a night where so much attention will be on Ohtani and Mike Trout.
