The Angels and Padres have both been struggling as of late. Each team lost a series over the weekend and will look to get back on track in San Diego. The numbers are very even for both sides, and there isn’t a clear advantage for either team coming into this matchup. Blake Snell will look to build on his success over the past month as he takes the ball for San Diego. Jaime Barria will pitch for the Angels, and he has posted solid numbers during his time on the mound. The first pitch from Petco Park is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET and can be seen nationally on FS1.

The Angels and Padres are entering this contest in a similar position. Los Angeles and San Diego are each 1-4 in their past five games. The Angels will travel to San Diego for this contest, and they’re 22-21 on the road in 2023. This is similar to the Padres' 20-22 record at home this year. However, over the course of the season, the Padres have underperformed, and the Angels have exceeded expectations.
Los Angeles is in a position to make the postseason, while San Diego will have to claw themselves out of a hole. They’re currently fourth in the National League West, and they’re looking up at one of the best teams in baseball, the Los Angeles Dodgers. Even though the Padres have struggled, we like San Diego to find a way to win their series opener against the Angels. Look for Snell to thrive on the bump, and the Padres to come through with a big hit in the late innings.
Snell will take the ball and look to build on his success. Snell is just 4-7, but he has put together five straight quality starts. He is coming off a “rough” outing against the Pirates, where he was very strong. These numbers show how good Snell has been in the ladder portion of the first half of the season. He went six innings against Pittsburgh, allowing two runs on three hits and striking out ten batters.
In Snell’s past four starts, he has totaled 45 strikeouts. The numbers Snell has posted lately would make him a top contender for the National League Cy Young. Although, he started the season very poorly, and this is why his numbers are much more inflated. The pitcher has a 4-7 record with a 3.21 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP.
Barria will toe the rubber for the Angels, and he is 2-3 on the year with a 2.92 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. Although, there have been some clear flaws, with 16 walks and seven homers allowed in 49.1 innings of work. Barria got roughed up in his last start against the White Sox, allowing five runs in three innings. We believe this will carry into Monday’s game. Snell’s recent momentum will carry into this contest, and the Padres will earn a victory at home.
The Angels have only won once in their past five games. The team is 45-41 on the season and holds the offensive advantage coming into this game. The team has scored 418 runs on the year, and this is thanks to their 126 home runs. Shohei Ohtani has played a huge role for his team in 2023 and is on pace for 59 homers. This would be three short of Aaron Judge’s American League record that he set last season.
Ohtani is batting .306 with a .390 OBP. His OPS is 1.060 and he has blasted 31 homers on the year. Ohtani has worked well with Mike Trout on offense, and the Angels have constantly terrorized opposing pitchers in 2023. Yet, we don’t believe this will happen against Snell.
San Diego is struggling to win games consistently. They will have their hands full with the Angels throughout this series. Although, they have a great chance to win the opener with Snell on the mound. The Padres have been so bad this season because they haven’t put the ball in play. There is too much swing and miss throughout this roster, and players like Juan Soto have underperformed.
The one positive for the Padres in 2023 is that Fernando Tatis Jr. is having a great year after missing two seasons. He is batting .280 with 16 homers and a .867 OPS. Look for Tatis to perform against Barria, and the Padres to start this series with a victory.
