On Tuesday night, an entertaining interleague affair will play out, as the Los Angeles Angels visit the Atlanta Braves. Atlanta will put its National League Cy Young candidate on the mound in this contest, giving them a major pitching advantage in this contest. But the Angels bring plenty of firepower to Truist Park, as Shohei Ohtani leads the Angels lineup into a game the Angels need to help their Wild Card prospects.
The Los Angeles Angels come into Tuesday night on a two-game winning streak, which includes a win over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night. The Angels held the Braves to just one run on Monday night, a feat they may need to replicate on Tuesday. With Spencer Strider pitching for the Braves, the Angels pitching staff is going to need to be on point for them to have a chance to win this matchup.
Patrick Sandoval will get the start for this game opposite Strider, though Sandoval’s numbers have not been horrible compared to those of the NL Cy Young candidate this season. Sandoval is just 6-7 on the season, but his ERA stands at 4.13 on the year. He has allowed just seven home runs in 98 innings this season, and his ability to avoid giving up the long ball could help him slow down a dangerous Braves offense.
The Angels are three games back of the last AL Wild Card spot in the American League going into this game. Despite the offensive fireworks of Shohei Ohtani, who is nearing 40 home runs on the season, the rest of the Angels lineup has not stepped up around him. That needs to change starting tonight against Strider to kickstart a run to the postseason for the Angels.
The Atlanta Braves come into Tuesday night at 30 games above the .500 mark, as they are 67-37 on the season. They are 35-20 so far this season and will look to improve on both of those records with a victory at home against the Los Angeles Angels. With Spencer Strider on the mound, the Braves are heavy favorites in this contest, but nothing is a sure thing in baseball.
Strider comes into this game as one of three co-favorites to win the NL Cy Young award. He has a record of 11-3 and an ERA of 3.73, though he has allowed 18 home runs in his 123 innings of work. Strider leads the league in strikeouts for the season, and his ability to miss bats will set up epic confrontations against Ohtani when Strider is pitching and Ohtani steps into the batter's box on Tuesday night.
Fortunately for the Braves, they have superior lineup depth to the Angels coming into this game. While Ohtani is one of the great individual hitters in the sport right now, the Braves enter this game ranked second in the league in runs scored for the year. Their overall depth will be a huge difference-maker as the Braves look to even this series at a game apiece to start this week.
