Tigres UANL will look to continue stamping their authority in the league after clinching a nail-biting 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul in their last match. The defending champions controlled most of the possession and created more shots on target in a match that remained neck and neck till the final whistle. Uriel Antuna (45+3’) opened the scoring for Cruz Azul, while Andre-Pierre Gignac (61’) and Rafael Carioca (90+6’) netted one goal each to seal all three points.
Club Tijuana, meanwhile, will have their task cut out against a formidable opponent. But they will fancy their chances to register an upset after clinching a 2-0 victory over Atlas in the previous match. Tijuana netted through Christian Rivera (14’) and Kevin Castaneda (62’) to seal a clinical victory.
The visiting Tigres UANL will be the favorites to win the contest against Club Tijuana.
Club Tijuana and Tigres UANL have faced off 25 times in the Liga MX since their first meeting in October 2011. It has been a lopsided rivalry, as Tigres have clinched victory in 14 matches while Tijuana has only three wins, and eight matches ended in a draw.
Earlier, in January this year, the clubs faced off in a Liga MX Clausura contest. Tigres controlled the majority of ball possession and had more shots on target. However, forward Pedro Alexis Canelo (3’) netted an early goal for Tijuana, while Gignac (60’) equalized in the second half.
Tijuana will look to defend their fortress after registering four wins and one draw in their last five matches at home, while Tigres will be keen to improve their away record. The visitors have recorded two wins, two losses and one draw in their last five fixtures.
Club Tijuana will be wary of Tigres' prowess as they look to extend their unbeaten run at home in the current Apertura campaign.
The hosts lost their inaugural match in the 2023/24 Liga MX Apertura season against Pumas UNAM at home. But they have bounced back since, registering wins over Cruz Azul, Toluca, FC Juarez, San Luis, Atlas FC and a draw against Mazatlan FC.
The hosts are placed in the eighth spot with 20 points from 14 fixtures. However, a win can improve their position significantly in the 2023 Apertura points table.
Tijuana will leapfrog San Luis to take the fourth spot in the table with 23 points if they register an upset over their better-placed opponents. The victory will also help them close the gap with the Tigres to five points.
The good news for the hosts is that all their players are fit and available for selection. However, all eyes will be on their talismanic center forward, Carlos Gonzalez, to score the goals. The Paraguayan has netted nine goals and assisted once in 13 appearances.
He will expect to find support in Mexican midfielder Fernando Madrigal, who has scored thrice in 13 appearances. Meanwhile, Mexican right-back Diego Barbosa will be critical on the flanks, providing crosses into the center to set up goals. He has provided two assists in 14 appearances in the ongoing season.
The favorites, the Tigres, will be eager to seal a victory and consolidate their position in second place. As things stand, the defending champions are trailing league leader Club America by five points.
A win for Tigres will close the gap to two points between the top two clubs in the league, but that could be temporary as Club America are in fine form. However, The hosts aim to finish the regular season strong, setting the perfect tone for the playoffs.
Mexican midfielder David Ayala has remained out of action this Apertura season due to a broken knee cap.
He sustained the injury in January and is expected to be available for selection soon. His return will boost Tigres’ squad ahead of the playoffs.
French forward Gignac will be the key in front of goals for the visitors. He has been the most valuable player for the side, netting eight goals, including three penalties and four assists in 10 appearances.
Tigres will expect Nicolas Ibanez to bring his goal-scoring boots to the match. The Argentine center-forward has been promising in the league and will be expected to make his presence felt. He has netted five times and assisted once in 12 appearances.
