Tigres UANL have faced Pachuca twice this year – once in Clausura and once in Apertura – and lost both games. They will be keen on ending the losing streak but will need a lot going their way to get there.
The last time these two teams met in the knockout stages was in Clausura 2019. Both the legs ended in 1-1 draws, and Tigres UANL managed to go through as they had finished higher in the table.
If the two meetings this season end in draws, it will be Pachuca who go through as they finished 4th in the table, while Tigres UANL were 5th. The two teams were separated by just two points, and it was down to their meeting, which the home side won 2-0 to take all three points.
Tigres UANL’s Jesús Angulo was sent off in the 13th minute of the match, and that worked in favor of Pachuca. Nicolas Ibanez made the most of the sending-off and scored the opening goal of the match just three minutes later. The home side could not add more before the break but managed to keep hold of their lead.
Ibanez doubled his and his side’s tally after the hour mark to seal the win and collect all three points. The home side dominated the game with 58% possession, and 19 shots, of which 6 were on target. In return, Tigres UANL managed just 9 shots, with just three on target and all getting saved by the keeper.
Tigres UANL had control of their spot in the top 4 until the end, but they lost thrice in the last seven matches, and that helped Pachuca jump above in the table.
They started the season with a loss to Cruz Azul but managed to pull themselves together and go on a 5-match winning run. However, their run came to an end at the hands of Pachuca, the side they face this week in the quarterfinal. Another 4-match unbeaten run followed the loss, but then three losses in the last seven games saw them slip from the top 4 spots.
Tigres UANL did not have the best of starts in their reclassification round clash with Club Necaxa. Javier Aquino sent off in the 20th minute and the home side had to play over 70 minutes with just 10 men.
However, they still managed to dominate possession in the first half and had more shots than their opponents. They could not find the back of the net and went into the break goalless.
Club Necaxa were also reduced to 10 men soon after the restart as Facundo Batista was sent off. The referee had initially given him a yellow card, but VAR changed the decision and both teams were down to 10 men in the 50th minute.
André-Pierre Gignac made the most of the situation and scored the opening goal of the match at the hour mark. The Frenchman made it 2-0 just 12 minutes later and sealed the win for Tigres UANL. He scored from both his shots on target and was easily the man of the match.
Tigres UANL’s last win over Pachuca was in the Apertura last year. They sealed a 3-0 win thanks to goals from Luis Quiñones, Nico Lopez, and Juan Vigón.
They took the lead in the 9th minute via Quinones, and it was doubled just three minutes later. Lopez found the back of the net, and the double whammy saw Pachuca stunned.
The home side, who were 2-0 up, decided to sit back and defend as they did not want to get caught on the counters. Pachuca tried a lot to make a comeback in the game and had 18 attempts at goal, but failed to score from any of them.
Vigon added another Tigres UANL right after the break to make things for Pachuca and seal the win for the home team.
Pachuca were on a good run into the business end of the season but slipped up in two of their last three matches. They were beaten 2-1 by Juarez FC and then drew to Monterrey on the final day.
Luckily, the two matches did not come back to haunt them as they were helped by the poor form of Tigres UANL. They clinched a place in the top 4 at the end and sealed a place in the quarterfinal.
Pachuca will be going into the game with a lot of confidence this week, as they have beaten Tigres UANL twice this year. The away side has won once in Clausura and then again in Apertura this season.
The clash in Clausura saw Víctor Guzmán score a winner in the 86th minute to seal the win for the home side. It was the midfielder’s second goal of the match after he found the back of the net in the 55th minute to open the scoring. He was their best player in the match, but Luis Quiñones ensured Pachuca did not run away with the game.
The Tigres UANL star scored in the 65th minute to level things up in the game and make it a dramatic ending. The home side eventually came out victorious and walked away with all three points.
In the Apertura meeting, Nicolás Ibáñez scored twice – once in each half – to seal the win for Pachuca. They did get some helping hand from Tigres UANL’s Jesús Angulo as he got sent off in the 13th minute of the match and the away side had to struggle with 10 men for over 80 minutes.
Pachuca will need to be careful this week as they will be going into the game as the favorites to win. The player should not be overconfident as they have already beaten Tigres UANL twice this season.
Both wins came in contrasting fashion as they dominated in one while edging out the win in the other. They needed a late winner when the two sides met in the Apertura, while the win in Clausura was one of their best performances – dominated possession, had more shots, and defended well from the start.
