Tigres UANL are winless in their last three league meetings against Atlas but that streak might come to an end this weekend. Atlas have had the upper hand in this fixture in recent times. They have defeated Tigres UNAL twice in their last five meetings and kept a clean sheet during both the wins.
The two sides last met in the Clausura semi-final earlier this year, when Atlas managed to beat Tigres on aggregate. Julio Furch, Luis Reyes and Julián Quiñones scored in the first leg to help them win 3-0, while Julián Quiñones and Aldo Rocha scored in the second leg to help them seal a 5-4 win despite a stunning comeback from Tigres.
André-Pierre Gignac scored a second-half hat trick and Igor Lichnovsky added another to make it a dramatic ending, but Rocha scored from the spot deep into stoppage time to seal the win and a place in the final.
The last time Tigres defeated Atlas in the league was when they faced off in the Clausura in early 2021. Carlos Gonzalez scored the opening goal in the 17th minute, but Tigres had to wait until the 91st minute to double their lead. Julián Quiñones scored in injury time to seal the victory with just their second shot on target. Atlas had dominated the match but failed to get on the scoresheet despite having more possession and 18 shots in the game.
The last meeting in Apertura ended in a 1-1 draw after Nico López’s penalty for Tigres was canceled out by Diego Barbosa in the second half.
Tigres UANL finished 6th in the Apertura last year and got better when the Clausura started. They managed to collect 33 points in 17 matches, and finish 2nd in the league table. However, they couldn’t go on to challenge in the final, as they lost to Atlas in the semis.
To ensure things get even better this time around, Tigres UANL have done well in the transfer market. Jordy Caicedo and Vladimir Loroña have been added to the squad, while Jesús Garza has also been promoted from the U20 side.
There have been a few exits as well, with Carlos González and Jesús Dueñas leaving for Toluca and FC Juarez respectively. Julián Quiñones, who scored against them in both the semifinal matches while on loan at Atlas has moved to their opponents on a permanent deal.
Tigres started their season at home but could not get a win. Rafael Baca scored in the 16th minute for Cruz Azul and the home side could not make a comeback in the first half. Florian Thauvin made it 1-1 right after the restart, but Ángel Romero restored the lead for Azul after the hour-mark.
Sebastián Córdova made it level in the 75th minute, but Tigres conceded a penalty in the 92nd and Santiago Giménez made no mistake from the spot.
André-Pierre Gignac opened his account for the season with a goal in the 7th minute against Mazatlan in the second match of the season. That turned out to be the lone goal of the match, and the away side held on despite playing with 10 men for the majority of the second half.
Sebastián Córdova was sent off in the 51st minute for a foul, a straight red card.
Tigres were at home in the third match of the season, and managed to get a win. They had to struggle a little, but Raymundo Fulgencio scored the lone goal of the match to seal the victory in the second half. Miguel Herrera will be looking for more from his players as they have been far from convincing this season.
The two wins have come by margins of just one goal each, while the loss showed they were not solid at the back. A quick fix is needed to ensure Tigres keep the run going and manage to finish in the top 4.
All players are fit and available for the upcoming game.
Atlas won both the Apertura and the Clausura last year, and were automatically awarded the Campeón de Campeones title; they were aiming to make it three title wins in a row this season but are off to a poor start.
They were up against the 2021 Campeón de Campeones winners Cruz Azul in the Supercopa de Liga MX in June and ended up losing. Emanuel Aguilera handed Atlas the lead in the 41st minute but they failed to make it to halftime with the lead.
Santiago Giménez scored for Azul in injury time, while Ángel Romero doubled the lead right after the hour mark.
The 2021 champions looked set to win the game, but Julián Quiñones proved to be the hero as he scored the equalizer in the 91st minute. However, Quiñones could not repeat his heroics in the penalty shootout and his missed chance, along with that of Edison Flores, meant that they lost 4-3 in the shootout.
The start of the Liga MX Apertura season did not go to plan either, as they drew to Club America to start off. The goalless draw saw them struggle to create chances and they managed just one shot on target.
Leonardo Fernández, Fernando Navarro and Valber Huerta scored in the first 15 minutes of the match to hand Toluca a stunning 3-0 lead over Atlas in the second game. Jesús Ocejo pulled one back for Atlas right before halftime, but it did not spark a comeback.
Aldo Rocha scored a late goal to make it 3-2, but that came after the home side were reduced to 10 men with Marcel Ruíz sent off. Atlas finally managed to end their winless streak by beating Cruz Azul. Jonathan Herrera handed them the lead but Santiago Giménez once again got on the scoresheet to level things up.
Carlos Rotondi was sent off for Azul right before half time, and that changed the momentum.
Jeremy Márquez and Julián Quiñones capitalized to make it 3-1 to Atlas and Christian Tabó’s goal late for Azul in the match did not change the result.
Atlas have done well in the transfer market too with Julián Quiñones signed on a permanent deal while Edison Flores, Mauro Manotas and Idekel Domínguez have also been added to the squad.
Mauro Manotas remains out with a cruciate ligament injury. All other players are fit and available for the upcoming game.
