Santos Laguna do not have a great record against Club Leon in their recent meetings. They have lost three of the last six matches and won just once.
That win came back in 2020 and in a dramatic fashion. Brian Lozano and Diego Valdés scored from the spot and Octavio Rivero scored with a minute left on the clock to seal a 3-2 win.
The last meeting between these two sides ended in a 1-1 draw and that too was courtesy of a late goal. Ángel Mena scored for Club Leon 15 minutes into injury time after drama unfolded in the 8 minutes added on.
Neither of these teams has picked up a win in their last three games, although Leon are trailing even in that period because Laguna at least managed to pick up a point against Queretaro last weekend, while the visitors come into the game with three straight losses. Despite that, the high stakes and the past record make us think that Leon will be able to turn this around and pick up points as they push desperately to hold on to their playoffs spot.
The equation is quite simple for Santos Laguna in this game: lose, and they’re out of contention for the playoffs. Santos Laguna have a lot to do if they want to get into the playoffs. However, they cannot focus only on the end result as they need to work on their tactics in the match first.
Three wins in their last 8 matches have given Santos an outside chance of making it to the playoffs, but they still need help from the teams above them. They are two places and three points off the playoff spots, and if they are to get there, they need to win both their matches and hope for another side or two drop points.
Their win over Cruz Azul handed them the much needed confidence to kick start their season, and they followed it up with a 3-2 win over Pumas UNAM. Harold Preciado scored the winner for them and that saw Santos finally start thinking of making it to the playoffs.
However, it was not all glory for them as they lost to Guadalajara in the next game. José Macías scored the lone goal of the game, while captain Dória was sent off for Santos at the very end of the game. They bounced back with a stunning 4-0 win over Club Tijuana, and the talk of playoffs was back on. Fernando Gorriarán and Leonardo Suárez scored one each, while Harold Preciado had a brace in the second half to seal their biggest win of the season.
Confidence was up again, and they managed to get a point from their match against the top 4 chasers, Puebla. They were 2-0 down in the game, but late goals from Leonardo Suárez and Eduardo Aguirre saw them pull level with 10 minutes left and get a draw.
They stunned Liga MX followers once again after beating Pachuca in the next game week. The league leaders have lost just twice this season, and the 3-1 defeat at the hands of Santos Laguna was the biggest upset of the season. Brian Lozano converted from the spot before Harold Preciado made it 2-0 at the start of the second half. Jordan Carillo Rodriguez sealed the win by making it 3-0 before Nicolás Ibáñez for the consolation for the league leaders.
However, since then they have lost two of their last three games, while drawing the other. It is a terrible time to be losing steam for them and this last league match at home seems more and more like the most important game of the season for them now.
Club Leon had a game to forget this week when they faced Club America. They ended up losing 2-0 and also had three players sent off. José Rodríguez, Victor Dávila, and William Tesillo will be missing the game this weekend, while Alberto Herrera is back from his suspension after getting sent off in the loss to Puebla.
They have been shown 5 red cards in their last four matches – a sign that the frustration of not getting wins is getting to the players. They have not won any of their previous four games, and the only point they picked up was against Queretaro – a side struggling near the end of the table who have picked up just 2 wins this season.
Leon were comfortably in the playoffs spots at one point, but will now have to work extra hard to seal their place. They do have one lifeline in the race as they face Toluca next, a match that could potentially end up as a straight shoot out for 12th place. Even if they do lose this weekend, they can seal a place in the playoffs if they win their final match of the season, as Toluca are also fighting for a spot and are the side currently below them in the league table.
Club Leon made a very good start to the season and had lost just twice in their first nine matches. They had picked up four wins as well and had collected a total of 15 points. However, things have been going downhill since then as they have managed to get just four points in their last six matches.
Their four recent losses have been disappointing results. The 2-0 loss to Atletico de San Luis saw their opponents move above them in the league table. Leon did manage to hold on to the possession in the game, but failed to get shots on target. They managed just two shots on goal, while San Luis got five and converted from two.
Puebla were on a bad run, and they managed to end their winless streak against Leon. Fernando Aristeguieta scored the lone goal of the game as Pedro Hernández was sent off in the 5th minute for San Luis, while Puebla’s Pablo Parra and Alberto Herrera were handed marching orders in the second half.
Club America made things worse for Leon this week as they picked up the three points and jumped ahead of Los Panzas Verdes in the league table. Leon are technically about 4 points away from putting everyone else out of contention for the 12th place spot; they will be keen on sealing that this weekend rather than face some additional pressure in their final game of the season against Toluca.
