Santos Laguna should be able to get the win over Club León this week as they are playing at home and are in better form than the away side this season.
Santos Laguna to win (-135)
Pick made on 08/17/2022 at 07:48 PM EST
Santos Laguna have beaten Club León just once in their last six meetings, but this week should make it two wins in seven. They are the ones in form this season and are playing at home – making it a double advantage for them.
Santos Laguna’s last win over Club Leon was back in 2020, when they met in Clausura. Since then, they have faced the Leon side four times and lost twice.
The 3-2 win in 2020 was a dramatic one as there were three penalties awarded in the game. The home side scored both their penalties early in the second half to take a 2-1 lead, after Jean Meneses had put the away side ahead in the 10th minute.
Ángel Mena equalized from the spot for Club Leon in the 86th minute, but they could not walk away with a point from the game. Octavio Rivero scored the winner for Santos Laguna in the 89th minute to help them collect all three points.
Club Leon’s last win in this fixture was back in Clausura 2021. Ángel Mena scored from the spot in the 24th minute, before Santos got a penalty and Fernando Gorriarán equalized 8 minutes later. Fernando Navarro restored the lead for Leon just before the hour mark and they were set for the win. The referee awarded Santos Laguna a penalty in the 93rd minute, but it was ruled out by VAR, and thus the game ended 2-1.
The last two meetings between these two sides have ended in a draw – both with the scoreline at 1-1. There is a good chance of it becoming a hattrick of draws, but Club Leon will have to score early and sit back deep for the rest of the match.
Santos Laguna did not have the best of times in Clausura earlier this year as they failed to make it to the playoffs after finishing outside the top 12. They could not muster enough points to make it at the end and missed out by 2 points.
They knew they needed a good window to close the gap, and they managed to do decently well. Cecilio Domínguez was signed on a free transfer, while José Lozano joined from Atlas. They needed more reinforcements and managed to get Juan Brunetta on loan for the season, while Omar Campos and Jordán Carrillo got promoted from the U20 side.
Their season was off to a good start as they defeated Monterrey in their Apertura season opener. They had to make dramatic comebacks in the game – once from 2-0 and then from 3-2 to win it at the end. Brian Lozano scored from the spot in the 91st minute to seal the win, while Monterrey had a goal disallowed in the 101st minute by VAR.
The come-from-behind win was a good way to start the season, but they could not carry the momentum into the next game. They were beaten 1-0 by Puebla in an away fixture after Gustavo Ferrareis scored the lone goal of the match in the 11th minute, while Santos Laguna had a penalty ruled out by VAR in the first half.
Santos Laguna were at home in the next game and ended up drawing to Guadalajara. José de Jesús González handed the away side the lead soon after the second half began, and the home side needed to wait until the 70th minute to equalize. Eduardo Aguirre scored for Santos, and that helped them gain a point.
With four points from three games, Santos Laguna were looking to do better things but lost to Toluca in gameweek four. Hugo Rodríguez managed to pull one back for the away side in the 75th minute after Leonardo Fernández and Jordan Sierra handed the home team a 2-0 lead in the first half.
Santos Laguna ended their three-match winless streak when they faced Atlas at home. Juan Brunetta scored the winning goal at the hour mark for the home side to seal a 1-0 win.
The win gave them confidence, and that was seen in the next game against Cruz Azul. Javier Correa, Hugo Rodríguez, Eduardo Aguirre, and Carlos Orrantia scored for the home side while the away side did not manage any in the 4-0 game.
Tigres UNAL proved to be a tough fixture for Santos Laguna, and they ended up losing 2-0. Sebastián Córdova and Luis Quiñones scored for the Tigres before they were reduced to 10 men. Rafael Carioca was shown the red card after two bookable offenses in the game, but Santos Laguna did not manage to make a comeback despite the extra man on the pitch.
Ayrton Preciado and Dória are out injured and will not feature against Club Leon.
Club Leon have not made the best of starts this season and have won just twice so far. They have played 8 matches this season, and lost thrice while drawing as many times.
Byron Castillo, Julien Célestine and Javier Ibarra have been signed, while Lucas Di Yorio and Alfonso Alvarado have been loaned in. They have also promoted Óscar Villa and Juan Rangel from the U20 side to bolster their squad.
Club Leon made a decent start to the season when they defeated Atletico de San Luis on the opening day of the season. They edged out a 2-1 win with Lucas Di Yorio scoring the winner in the 93rd minute after Byron Castillo’s own goal canceled out Federico Martínez’s first half goal for Leon.
They made a remarkable comeback in the next game as they went from 3-0 down to draw 3-3 with Pumas UNAM. Lucas Di Yorio scored twice in the second half with Joel Campbell scoring the other as the away side let slip of a comfortable lead.
However, the stunning draw could not build the confidence of the players, and they had to settle for two more draws. Puebla and Guadalajara also held Club Leon and they were unbeaten after four matches, but with just seven points.
Toluca handed them their first loss of the season as Daniel Álvarez scored in the final minute of the match to secure all three points. Fidel Ambríz was sent off for Leon in the second half and that did not make things easy.
They managed to beat Club Americ a3-2 in the next matches, but have lost their next two games. They were thrashed 5-1 by Monterrey, while Mazatlan sealed a 3-0 win.
No player is injured or ruled out.
