Pachuca have had the upper hand in their fixtures against Atletico de San Luis in recent fixtures. The table-toppers have won 4 of the last 5 meetings and drawn the other game.
The last time these two sides faced was in the first match of the Clausura season, and Pachuca ended up winning it with ease. Nicolás Ibáñez scored the opening goal at the hour mark before making it 2-0 from the spot with the final kick of the match.
Pachuca dominated the game from the very start and had 52% possession and 15 shots at goal. They landed 6 of them on target, while none of the 9 shots taken by Atletico de San Luis bothered Oscar Ustari, who did not have to make a single save in the game.
The last time San Luis managed to beat Pachuca was back in the 2019 Apertura season. Juan Castro scored midway through the second half and Diego Valdez sealed the way in added time. Yet again, Pachuca had more possession and shots on goal, but on that occasion, Atletico managed to get more on target and sealed the win.
Atletico de San Luis have not been at their best this season but managed to get into the playoffs with a win in the penultimate gameweek. They are riding their luck and that was seen in the reclassification round of the playoffs too.
In the reclassification last weekend, they were drawn against Monterrey, who finished 7th in the league this season. Vincent Janssen handed the home side the lead early in the first half and the teams went into the break at 1-0.
San Luis came out strong and managed to get level just over a minute after kick-off. Facundo Waller was brought on as a substitute at the break and he made an immediate impact by scoring the equalizer. The midfielder turned provider 6 minutes later and assisted Jhon Murillo for Atletico’s second goal, to put them in front.
André Jardine’s side made the mistake of sitting back after taking the 2-1 lead instead of using the momentum and going for more goals. Their plan was working well as Monterrey were unable to play their natural, free-flowing game and had to take shots from out far with the box crowded. Michell Rodríguez was introduced by the home side in the 90th minute and he managed to find the equalizer in the 96th minute of the game, taking the two sides into the penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Germán Berterame, Ricardo Chávez and Javier Güemez scored for Atletico de San Luis while Marcelo Barovero saved penalties from Vincent Janssen and Maximiliano Meza to hand them a 3-1 win. San Luis were through, once again making the most of their chances and getting the result at the very end.
It was a true reflection of their league season, where they won 5 of their last 9 matches to squeeze into the playoff spots. They lost three of those matches and drew once – against Club Tijuana, who failed to make it to the playoffs.

If San Luis are to have any chance of making it past Pachuca, they would need their defense to stop leaking goals and their midfield to have more control of the game. But most importantly, they would also need Germán Berterame to get on the scoresheet and make the most of his half chances.
He is their top scorer this season with seven goals – five of them coming in the last five league games this season. He is also leading their assists charts this season with three assists but is not the only one up there. Rubens Sambueza, Jhon Murillo, and Juan Manuel Sanabria also have three assists each this season and will be the ones who need to step up and deliver.
Pachuca are coming into the quarterfinals as the favorites to win the match and go all the way into the finals too. They were in stunning form during the league season and only lost thrice – one of them coming on the final day when their league position was sealed and they rotated the squad.
However, Guillermo Almada’s men need to be watchful, as their losses during the season came against sides that were in poor form. Their first defeat of the season came at the hands of Club Leon, who finished outside the top 12 and failed to qualify for the playoffs this season.
The second loss was a shocker as they were beaten by Santos Laguna, another side who could not collect points with any ease this season. The 3-1 defeat at the start of April did make things interesting at the top for a bit, but it did not help Laguna qualify for the playoffs. They finished 14th in the league table – missing out on the playoffs spots by a point.
The final loss came in the last game of the league season when Guillermo Almada experimented with the side. He made a few changes to the team and they could not beat Pumas UNAM. Juan Dinenno scored twice for them to seal the win and help them qualify for the playoffs, while the loss did not change anything for Pachuca as they finished on top with 38 points from 17 games.
Pachuca were on another level in the league this season and dropped points in just 2 other games. They ended the season winning 12 of their 17 matches – scoring 30 goals and conceding just 15. As alluded to earlier, Pachuca’s main issue could possibly be a small amount of complacency, as they managed to beat all 11 sides who finished in the top 12 but failed to pick up the three points against five of the six teams that finished bottom of the table. Their two draws this season were against Club Tijuana and Queretaro – sides that finished 16th and 17th in the table.
Queretaro took the unlikely lead when they met Pachuca in March. Jose Enrique Angulo scored in the fifth minute before Jose Enrique Angulo and Luis Chávez scored before halftime to make it 2-1 to the leaders. Ángel Sepúlveda did not let them run away with the win and managed to score Queretaro’s second goal of the game and end it 2-2.
On the other hand, Club Tijuana managed to keep Pachuca at bay despite having just 34% of the ball. They failed to get a single shot on target and kept out all 21 attempts by Pachuca. The league leaders could not get behind the defense and managed just 3 shots on target, with Gil Alcala saving all of them.
