Puebla have faced Juárez FC seven times in history, five of those coming in the league. They have won thrice and lost twice so far to their opponents and are on a 3-match unbeaten streak.
Juárez won the first ever fixture between these two sides when they met in Copa MX, back in 2019. They came back from 1-0 down at halftime to win 2-1 at the end. Jorge Espericueta scored from the spot to hand Puebla the lead, before Flavio Santos converted from the spot just before the hour mark to level things up.
Gabriel Hachen scored the winner for the away side in the 81st minute and they went on to win the tie. The second leg ended in a 1-1 draw and the new side had stunned the Liga MX giants.
Puebla did not have to wait long for their revenge as they won the first ever league meeting between these two sides, just 6 months later. The home side won 2-1 with goals from Lucas Cavallini and Matías Alustiza late in the game after Darío Lezcano handed Juarez the lead right at the halftime whistle.
The last time Juarez won in the league against Puebla was back in the 2020 edition of Apertura. They edged out a 1-0 win thanks to an early goal from Darío Lezcano. The home side did not have the majority of the possession but were able to get more shots on target and covert once to make all the difference. That turned out to be the only victory in the league for Juarez against Puebla.
The last meeting between these two teams took place earlier this year in Clausura. Puebla dominated the game with 61% possession and 13 shots but had to settle for a draw. Fernando Arce Jr scored from the only big chances created in the game by Juarez to hand them the lead in the 49th minute.
Juarez were happy to sit back and defend for the rest of the game but paid the price later. Alberto Herrera scored from a loose ball in the 70th minute to level things up, but could not spark the comeback for the home side and they had to share points with the team that finished rock bottom of the table. The draw eventually cost Puebla a place in the top 4 as they missed out by one point.
Puebla made a good start to the season after a shocking end to their Clausura season. They needed one point from the last three matches to seal a top four place but ended up losing all three. They managed to get past Mazatlan in the reclassification round, but were beaten by Club America in the quarterfinals.
This season, they were keen to avoid a crumble and were ready to fight from the very start. Puebla defeated Mazatlan once again in the opening game week of the Apertura season. They won 4-2 and gave the home side no real chance of making a comeback in the game.
They made things better in the next match by edging out a 1-0 win over Santos Laguna. Gustavo Ferraris scored the lone goal in the 11th minute and that was enough to help them get all three points from the match.
However, that turned out to be their last win in the league this season. They are now on an 8-match winless streak and are struggling to get points on the board.
The poor run of form started with a draw against Club Leon. Omar Fernández gave them the lead in the 21st minute, but Lucas Di Yorio leveled things up for Leon in the 79th minute to share the points in the match. They followed it up with a 2-2 draw against Cruz Azul.
Monterrey were up next for Puebla and they were handed their first defeat of the season. Stefan Medina scored the winner for the home side in the 30th minute as they managed a 1-0 win over Puebla.
Since then, Puebla are on a 5-match streak where they have been held by their opponents. Atletico de San Luis, Toluca, Club Tijuana, Club Necaxa and Atlas have all tried their best to beat Puebla, but have had to settle for a draw.
Puebla have now drawn seven times in the league – most in Apertura this season – just one more than Guadalajara, who sit 11th in the table.
No player is injured or suspended, but Jordi Cortizo has 4 bookings and could miss the next match if he picks up a yellow card against Juarez FC.
Juárez FC finished the Clausura season at the rock bottom of the table and knew that they needed a good start in Apertura. They did well in the transfer market as well and brought in reinforcements to bolster the squad and fight for a playoff spot.
They kicked off the season with a goalless draw at Guadalajara and then stunned Club Tijuana away from home. Juarez won 2-0 in their second match with Gabriel Fernández getting a brace in the second half.
They were then held by Queretaro in the next match but the start of the season proved to be a good one for Juarez. They were unbeaten after three matches, and had more points now than they did in Clausura at this stage.
However, things went downhill quickly as they were beaten by Club Necaxa and Tigres UNAL in the next two games. Both matches ended 1-0 in favor of the opponents.
Juarez did well to bounce back with draws against Toluca and Atletico de San Luis, but were beaten by Club America next. With three losses in five games, they looked like they were set for another long season where they would finish outside the top 12.
Jesús Dueñas came to their rescue and reignited their confidence by scoring the lone goal in the win over Atlas away from home. They had just two shots on target and 44% of the possession, but made the most of their chance and walked away with all three points.
Juarez went behind in their next match when they hosted Mazatlan. Alfonso Sánchez scored in the 10th minute, while Maximiliano Silvera got himself sent off three minutes later. 10men Juarez still fought for the points and Gabriel Fernández scored the equalizer in the 47th minute to seal a 1-1 draw.
Maximiliano Olivera is suspended, while Javier Salas has 4 bookings and could miss the next match if he picks up a yellow card against Puebla.
