Pachuca found it hard to fight Atlético de San Luis on Wednesday and had to settle for a draw in the end. The table toppers took the lead twice, but the home side ensured there was all to play for in the second leg by making a good comeback.
Nicolás Ibáñez scored with the first shot of the game in the 5th minute, and it seemed like the league leaders were going to run away with the game. They had not lost a single game in which they scored first this season and were in complete control from the start.
However, Atletico de San Luis managed to get a lifeline after Jhon Murillo was fouled in the box. The home side made no mistake as Germán Berterame slotted the equalizer in the 23rd minute.
San Luis did not have the most of the ball but were the ones getting more shots off in the match. They did not manage to get them on target and were made to pay when Nicolás Ibáñez scored his and Pachuca’s second goal of the game with 13 minutes left on the clock.
Pachuca were relaxed despite the constant pressure from the home side. They took things a touch lightly at the end, and substitute Juan Manuel Sanabria got the second goal of the game for San Luis.
The equalizer came in the 94th minute of the game, and thus There was no time left for Pachuca to hit back.
However, we think coming into their home leg without trailing on goals is going to work massively in favor of the team that finished first in the league stages of the Clausura season. They’re strong favorites and we think they’ll overcome the defensive frailties that allowed this fixture to have parity in the first place.
Pachuca were in ruthless form in the league and had won all their matches against the sides who finished in the top 12. However, they had to battle in the first leg of the quarterfinals against Atletico de San Luis.
The table toppers could not make the most of their possession and managed just seven shots at goal. They had five shots on target and made the most of their chances by scoring twice, but they could not capitalize on the lead.
Guillermo Almada will be keen on reminding his players what they did in the season and would be hoping to reignite the same in the next game. His side won 12 of their 17 matches and were unstoppable for any of the sides in the top half of the table.
The only games they dropped points in was against the sides who failed to qualify for the playoffs – losses to Club Leon, Santos Laguna, and Pumas UNAM while drawing against Club Tijuana and Queretaro.
Moreover, they have a good record against Atletico de San Luis as they have lost just four times to them in history. Three of those losses came in Copa MX, and the only loss in the league was back in 2019 – the first time these two sides met in the Apertura. Since then, Pachuca have won three of the four meetings in Liga MX and drawn the other.
At the time of writing, no player is ruled out injured or suspended for the second leg of their quarter-final fixture. Guillermo Almada is expected to name the same starting XI and expect his men to get the job done.
Atlético de San Luis have not been great this season, but they have never given up. With eight games to go in the league season, they had just an outside chance of making it to the playoffs. They fought their way back and ended the season 10th in the table, and qualified for the playoffs with a game left.
The fightback started when they faced Mazatlan in early April. Jhon Murillo scored the lone goal of the game to get them their 3rd win of the season and take them into double figures in the points section.
They followed it up with a draw against Club Tijuana, another side who struggled for points this season. Facundo Waller scored in the 85th minute to help San Luis pick up a point after Lisandro López scored from the spot to help Tijuana take the lead.
The late goal handed them a confidence boost, and that was clear in their 2-0 win over Club Leon in the next match. Germán Berterame and Jhon Murillo got on the scoresheet to help Atletico pick up their 4th win of the season.
Club Necaxa halted their 3-match unbeaten run and stunned them 4-2. Milton Giménez scored the first goal of the game in the 20th minute, but Atletico’s Germán Berterame pulled them level in the 34th minute. Rodrigo Aguirre scored twice, and Milton Giménez added another before the hour mark to hand the home side a comfortable 4-1 lead. Berterame got his and Atletico’s second goal of the game in the 81st minute, but that did not spark a comeback.
San Luis’s fate was still in their hands, but they needed to pick up 5 points from the remaining three matches. Things got easier after they defeated Pumas UNAM 2-0 in the next game with goals from Germán Berterame and Luis Fernando León.
Ricardo Chávez ensured they did not need to go into the final day of the season in need of a win and helped them beat Cruz Azul in the penultimate game week. The goal was the only one in the game that saw 7 yellow cards but, surprisingly, no red cards.
With the playoff spot sealed, André Jardine decided to switch things up and rest a few players in the final game of the season against Santos Laguna. They ended up losing 3-1 despite Germán Berterame handing them the lead early in the second half. Eduardo Aguirre, Brian Lozano, and José Ávila scored for the away side, but it was not enough for them to make it to the top 12.
Atletico de San Luis did not have an easy game in the playoffs too, as they were up against Monterrey, who finished 7th in the league. Vincent Janssen scored early in the game for the opponents, but Jhon Murillo and Facundo Waller continued their fine form and handed them the lead quickly after the halftime break. Michell Rodríguez scored with the last kick of the game to take it to the penalty shootout, but San Luis prevailed 3-1, thanks to Marcelo Barovero saving two penalties and Germán Berterame, Ricardo Chávez and Javier Güemez scoring theirs.
André Jardine has a fully fit squad at his disposal for the second leg against Pachuca. Rubens Sambueza and Facundo Waller got booked in the first leg but are not suspended for the second leg.
