This is a matchup between two sides on the opposite ends of the Liga MX table. Pachuca are currently in fourth place and fairly good form, whereas Club Tijuana are in 13th place and on a woeful run. Pachuca are playing at home and will be entering this match as heavy favorites. There is no reason to believe that they won’t win this match but they don’t historically have the best record against Club Tijuana.
Club Tijuana have won level 11, drawn six and lost nine of their 25 matches against Pachuca and will be hoping that the superiority here will come through for them because you can’t really make a strong case for them in this match based on recent form.
Club Tijuana will have to produce their best performance of the season to get all three points. Even a draw seems unlikely at this moment in time. The matches in recent years have been fairly high-scoring affairs, so there’s definitely a lot for fans to look forward to.
The two sides last faced each other back in April and it was a drab affair with the game ending 0-0. Pachuca had the lion’s share of the possession with 66% but couldn’t turn that into anything meaningful. They’d have come out of the game feeling like they should have won it, however, with 21 shots and three on target.
Club Tijuana, on the other hand, only managed to get five shots and none of them were on target. They’re unlikely to survive another assault of this kind on their goal and will have to improve on last time if they’re to get anything from this game.
It seems quite unlikely if we base this on recent form for both sides. Club Tijuana can take encouragement from the fact that Pachuca drew their last match in the league, which might slow down some of their momentum going forward.
Pachuca’s four game winning run was put to an end by 9th place Puebla in midweek. Pachuca showed some grit and fight to come back in this game which ended 2-2. Puebla scored the first two goals in the game thanks to Jordi Cortizo’s strike in the 17th minute, which was followed by a Martín Barragán finish in the 52nd minute.
Puebla only had 39% of the possession of the game and really surprised Pachuca with the two goals but Pachuca kept believing, taking 24 shots in total with 11 on target and were rewarded with two late goals. The first was scored by Nicolás Ibáñez in the 78th minute and Miguel Tapias in the 90th minute. They didn’t get all three points and are three points from the top of the table but showed the sort of spirit that will serve them well for the rest of the season.
Compared to some of their top of the table rivals, Pachuca have conceded fewer goals. The likes of Monterrey and Santos have conceded 13 and 15 goals respectively but Pachuca have only conceded 11 so far. This is certainly something to build on.
They have won their last three home matches as well, so it’s hard to see Club Tijuana, who have struggled to find the back of the net this season score too many against such a resolute defense.
The reason they aren’t at the very top of the table is because of a lack of thrust going forward. They’ve not scored anywhere close to the number of goals that some of their competitors have with just 19 so far this season. The goals have come from a select number of players and the others need to start contributing more.
Nicolas Ibanez has scored nine goals so far this season and Victor Guzman has got six but they have got little to no help from the rest of the team. For a team to win the big titles, the goals need to come from all over the park and that hasn’t been the case recently.
There was nothing to celebrate once again for Club Tijuana, who lost 2-1 to CD Guadalajara in midweek. It wasn’t the worst performance with Tijuana having 51% of the possession, getting 14 shots on goal with three on target and one finding the back of the net thanks to Franco di Santo’s equalizer in the 58th minute but that’s as good as it got for Club Tijuana on the day.
Guadalajara took the lead in the 47th minute thanks to Roberto Alvarado and Luis Olivas scored the winner nine minutes after Tijuana’s equalizer. Guadalajara only managed 10 shots on goal but were clinical on the day, getting four on target. It was yet another frustrating afternoon for Tijuana and they’re playing an in-form side, which isn’t ideal.
The losses and draws in recent weeks can be put down to the lack of goals in recent weeks. They’ve only scored 14 so far in this campaign and just three in their last six matches, which is bottom of the league numbers. Lisandro Lopez is the top scorer at the moment with four goals and he’s a defensive player, which sums up the attacking crisis in the team.
They’ve not won their last two away games either, which doesn’t bode very well for them against a strong Pachuca side. This game might just be a case of damage limitation. With 15 points on the board and little signs of improvement in recent weeks, it looks like they’ll drop further down the table after the weekend.
The only real hope that Tijuana have got in this game comes from Pachuca’s lack of killer instinct in front of goal. Tijuana haven’t been great defensively, conceding 22 goals so far in this campaign but there are many other teams in the Liga MX with worse defenses.
If Tijuana can sit tight and compact and make it difficult for Pachuca, the latter will get a bit frustrated and be reminded of their worries in the attacking department. Tijuana have to use whatever they can to get out of this sticky situation and be ready to battle for a point, nevermind all three.
