Mazatlán and Guadalajara are yet to pick up a win this season, but the away side should walk away with all three points this week.
Pick made on 08/04/2022 at 11:08 AM EST
Two teams in search of their first win of the season clash at the Estadio de Mazatlán this week. Mazatlán host Guadalajara with both sides in poor form and sitting outside the playoff places.
Guadalajara have had the upper hand in this fixture in recent times, as they have remained unbeaten in the last five meetings. They have beaten Mazatlan four times in those games and drawn the other.
However, this five-match unbeaten run has come after Mazatlan’s three-match losing streak. The home side pulled off three wins in a row in late 2018 and 2019, but have not been able to do much in the recent meetings.
When the two sides last met back in January this year, Guadalajara ran out 3-0 winners. They dominated the game with 70% possession, had 15 shots, and scored all three goals in the first half. The first goal came in the 45th minute from the spot via Angel Zaldívar before Alan Torres and Alexis Vega scored in stoppage time to make it 3-0 before the break.
The last time Mazatlan defeated Guadalajara was back in 2019 in Apertura. Mario Osuna scored from the spot in the 36th minute, just minutes after Edison Flores missed his penalty for Mazatlan.
The goal was the only one in the game, and the home side held on despite having just 37 possession and facing 21 shots. The referee awarded a penalty to Guadalajara as well in the first half, but VAR ruled it out, and they could not do much with their possession.
Just one of the last 16 competitive matches between these two sides has ended in a draw. That came in the 2021 Clausura when Mazatlan hosted Guadalajara.
Nicolás Díaz scored in the 6th minute for the home side, but the lead lasted just over 25 minutes. Jesús Molina equalized for the away side in the 34th minute, but they were unable to push on to get another goal despite having 64% possession in the game.
Mazatlán made a stunning comeback in the Clausura earlier this year and qualified for the playoffs on the final day. They won their last four matches and collected 12 points – three more than they did in the first 13 matches of the season.
The wins helped them finish 12th and take the final place in the reclassification round. Looking at the way they have started the season, a similar run would be required for them to get into the playoff sorts again.
Mazatlan has yet to pick up a win with one-third of the season done. They have collected just three points and lost thrice so far – making them the 2nd bottom team in the league.
The poor performances are not due to a lack of investment in the transfer market. Gabriel Caballero was backed by the club and they signed Josué Colmán, Yoel Bárcenas, Fernando Illescas, Enrique Cedillo, and Efraín Orona during the win.
Raúl Camacho, Andrés Montaño and Francisco López were promoted from the U20 squad to further bolster the first-team. Iván Moreno, Jorge Zárate, Jesús Zavala, Nicolás Díaz and Gonzalo Freitas were let go this summer to make room in the squad.
Despite the signings, Mazatlan have just not been able to perform in the league. They started the season with a 4-2 loss to Puebla at home before Tigen UNAL edged out a 1-0 win as well.
They got their first points of the season in unlikely fashion when they held Clausura table-toppers Pachuca away from home. Nicolás Benedetti scored seconds after the second half started to hand Mazatlan the lead, but Nicolás Ibáñez scored in injury time to stun the away side and share the points.
They took the lead against Atletico de San Luis in the next game, but Gonzalo Sosa’s goal was canceled out by Abel Hernández and the match ended 1-1. Luck was just not on Mazatlan’s side as they took the lead once again when they faced Pumas UNAM.
Eduard Bello scored in the 75th minute, but Nicolás Freire scored in the final minute of the match to seal a 1-1 draw for the home side. It was hard luck once again for Mazatlan as Carlos Vargas’s own goal handed Club Tijuana the lead in the second half before Victor Guzmán made it 2-0 to seal the win.
No player is injured or suspended for the upcoming game against Guadalajara.
Guadalajara were impressive in Clausura earlier this year and made it to the playoffs by winning their last four matches. They finished 6th in the table – level on points with 4th placed Club America – and were confident of pushing on this season in Apertura.
Atlas knocked them out in the quarterfinals, and the plan was to get better this season, and the club made good additions. Alan Mozo, Fernando González, Pável Pérez and Jesús Orozco Chiquete were signed in the window, with Raúl Gudiño, César Huerta, Javier López, Gael Sandoval, and José Madueña making way.
While the transfer targets were secured, things have not gone to plan on the pitch.
Guadalajara started the season at home to Juarez and could not beat the side that finished rock bottom of the Clausura table. They were held to a goalless draw, and things did not look good.
Atletico de San Luis were up next and the away side secured a 1-0 win. Facundo Waller scored the lone goal of the game in the first half stoppage time, and that saw San Luis walk away with all three points.
Guadalajara took on Santos Laguna, Club Leon, Queretaro and Pachuca in the next four matches, and they all ended in a draw. José de Jesús González gave them the lead in the second half against Laguna, but Eduardo Aguirre scored 4 minutes after coming on to get his side a point from the match.
Sebastián Pérez Bouquet handed Guadalajara the lead against Queretaro in the first half, but Ariel Nahuelpán equalized in stoppage time. Alexis Vega scored from the spot in the 81st minute to restore the lead, but they still ended up drawing as Mario Osuna converted from the spot for the home side with one minute left on the clock. The other two matches ended goalless.
Guadalajara played two club friendlies as well last 14 days but ended up losing both. They faced Juventus in the first friendly and were beaten 2-0 by the Italian side. They took on LA Galaxy on Wednesday night and were also defeated by the MLS side by the same scoreline.
Jesús Molina, José Macías and Sergio Flores are ruled out.
