This is a fascinating tie between two of the top teams in the league. Guadalajara are currently in fourth place on the Liga MX table and one point ahead of Club America. Guadalajara come into this game in better form and are the home side, but they have lost their last game in the league. Club America, on the other hand, have been a bit inconsistent in recent weeks but just beat Tigres, which will give them a big boost heading into the tie.
Guadalajara head into this tie as the favorite, but the odds don’t account for factors like momentum. Guadalajara have just lost some of the momentum they had been building in recent weeks, and Club America showed what they’re capable of when they’re in full flow last week.
It feels like Club America are finally getting into their stride, and Guadalajara might be on the receiving end of their full force this weekend. This is an excellent teaser for what’s to come in the playoffs.
Guadalajara have got the superior head-to-head record in this tie. They’ve won 11, drawn 10, and lost seven, but haven’t come out on top in their last five meetings. Club America have won three of the last five meetings, including the last two.
Despite not having the superior record, Club America will certainly have the psychological edge heading into this tie. Club America have conceded just two goals in the last five fixtures as well. The last match between the two sides occurred in September, and Club America won the match 3-1 quite comfortably. The match was friendly, but it showed Club America’s recent dominance in this fixture.
Guadalajara, of course, are a much better team this season than they have been in recently. They’ll not have a better chance of regaining superiority in this fixture – they’re playing at home and Club America aren’t the same force of recent years.
Guadalajara’s eight-game unbeaten run ended after a 1-0 loss to Puebla over the weekend. Guadalajara didn’t do a lot wrong in this game besides finding the net – they had 60% of the possession, took 19 shots to Puebla’s eight, but only hit the target twice.
Gustavo Ferrareis’s 40th-minute strike was enough to give Puebla all three points. The big worry for Guadalajara was the number of shots on target – they clearly played well enough to earn a draw, at the very least, but didn’t work the keeper enough. This has been an issue all season – they’ve only scored 14 goals in 11 games. This is a decent return, but they need a lot more if they want to beat some of the better sides in the league, like Club America.
Guadalajara have conceded just nine goals all season. Last season, they conceded 17 in the league, which cost them a playoff spot. This marked improvement has helped them climb five places this season, but their defense hasn’t had a test like Club America this season.
Club America have scored more goals (23) than any other side in the league this season. If Guadalajara can hold their own against a side with Club America’s firepower, it will cement their status as a solid defensive side. It’ll be interesting to see how they approach the game – they’re the home side, and the home teams are expected to dominate the ball, but that might not be the best move against a side with the attacking threats that Club America possesses.
Inversely, they can’t sit back for long periods either because Club America are too good a side not to take their chances. Manager Veljko Paunović will have to show all his tactical nous on Saturday.
It wasn’t vintage Club America but it got the job done. Club America have been inconsistent all season but put in one of their finest displays of the season in a 2-0 win over in-form Tigres over the weekend.
Jonathan Rodriguez got them off the mark in the 32nd minute before Leanardo Suarez confirmed the three points with a 79th-minute strike. Tigres had more of the ball (56% possession), but Club America had more control over the game.
Once they went up, it never looked like they would lose the match. They took 14 shots to Tigres' nine and had five on target compared to Tigres' three. It wasn’t just a big win because it was against Tigres, but also because they were playing away from home. Many fans and experts believe that Club America are still the best side in the league, and this was a little reminder of what they’re capable of when they’re switched on.
Club America have been scintillating in the attacking department once again. They’ve scored more goals (23) than any other side in the league but had a few issues in defense this season. They’ve conceded 14 already, which is why getting a clean sheet on the weekend was a big plus.
They also tempered the attack a little in the last match, which might just be the way forward. They have quality forward players who don’t need a second invitation to score a goal. If they can keep things a little tight at the back, there’s no reason why they can’t win the Liga MX championship this season.
They’ve been the most consistent league side for the last couple of seasons but the championship has eluded them since 2018. Having a more reserved approach isn’t the worst idea and might just help them get over the line. They have another tough away game against Guadalajara this weekend, and a similar approach might be required to get all three points.
