The winless streak of Tijuana in Liga MX was extended to ten games after their loss against Toluca last weekend. The club has played eight matches in the current Clausura campaign, losing four and drawing as many. The losses have come against Club America, Cruz Azul, CF Pachuca, and Toluca. Meanwhile, the stalemates were secured against Atlas FC, Chivas Guadalajara, Queretaro FC, and Atletico de San Luis. With a tally of four points after eight games, Tijuana are just two points off the bottom of the league table.
At the other end of the table, Monterrey are not ready to lose a game this season. The five-time Liga MX champions have squandered the opportunity to increase their title tally in the recent past, and this season, the club is not ready to falter. Eight games into the new season, Monterrey have registered five wins and have drawn three games. They have beaten Puebla, Santos Laguna, San Luis, Pachuca, and Juarez. The three draws have come against Queretaro, Club America, and Toluca. A win in the next match can take them to the top of the league table.
Considering the contrasting forms of the two teams in this fixture, it is not surprising to see Monterrey marked as the firm favorite to win. Despite being on the road, the five-time Liga MX champions are on a rampaging run, while Tijuana’s struggles are not ending. Hence, Monterrey are most likely and almost certainly set to win this encounter.
These two clubs are familiar with each other as they have collided 30 times in Liga MX. Monterrey have emerged victorious on 13 occasions, while Tijuana have won seven times. Ten of the remaining matches have ended in draws. These clashes also include multiple Liga MX playoff stage encounters.
In the Apertura 2023 season, at Estadio BBVA, Rogelio Funes Mori, Jesus Gallardo, and Victor Lopez found the back of the net for Monterrey before Carlos Gonzalez scored a consolation goal for the visitors as the match ended 3-1. It was an evenly matched contest on the pitch, but the hosts took their chances, while Tijuana fluffed their lines in the final third.
In the Apertura 2022 campaign, Tijuana hosted Monterrey in the Liga MX. It did not end well for the hosts as they were reduced to ten men after 34 minutes following Abraham Flores’ dismissal. German Berterame, Rodrigo Aguirre, and Jaziel Martinez found the back of the net for the visitors, and Monterrey waltzed away with all three points.
Tijuana's goalscoring average dropped below the one-goal mark after the club failed to score against Toluca. They have only scored seven goals in eight games so far, and with this weak attack, they might not be able to trouble the Monterrey defense.
Carlos Gonzalez has not scored in any of the last three matches, but Efrain Alvarez and Lucas Rodriguez have both scored in their previous two appearances. However, the former missed the last game and is doubtful for the next one.
In the latter stages of the Apertura 2023 season, Tijuana were on a magnificent run at home. They won all of their last five home games of the regular season, taking their total home win tally of that season to six out of nine matches.
However, that streak has ended with a four-game winless run at home. Tijuana have already matched their home loss tally of last season, and the other two matches have ended in draws.
The Tijuana back-four featuring Francisco Contreras, Nicolas Diaz, Kevin Balanta, and Diego Barbosa has done well in several games, but the pressure has been too much.
Tijuana have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last six league matches. The club can rise again, but only once the defense is fixed.

The Clausura 2024 season has reached its midway point, and Monterrey are only one of two clubs in Liga MX that is yet to lose a league game this season. They have the third-best goalscoring average, which they can improve further in the next match.
Maximiliano Meza and Sergio Canales were on the scoresheet in the last match, while Brandon Vazquez returned to the side as a substitute and scored the third goal. Overall, Fernando Ortiz’s men look prolific and will aim to keep this unbeaten run alive till the end of the regular season.
In the last seven Liga MX encounters between these two clubs, Monterrey have emerged victorious on four occasions, while the remaining three have ended in stalemates.
Tijuana have not beaten Monterrey since the Apertura 2020 season. Fabian Castillo bagged a brace that evening, while Funes Mori scored a consolation goal as Tijuana won 2-1.
Apart from Sebastian Vegas, Monterrey have every player available for the next match. They are on the road, but confidence will be high since the club has won two and drawn one of the three away games this season.
Across all competitions, Monterrey have remained unbeaten in their last four away games. They have won three and drawn one. This is a streak the five-time Liga MX champions would love to extend.
