Club Tijuana missed out on the play-in and playoff spots in the Apertura 2023 season after finishing 13th in the league, just two points off tenth place.
Club America lifted a record-extending 14th Liga MX title after beating Clausura 2023 champions Tigres UANL in the Apertura 2023 playoff final.
When these two clubs last met, Club America nabbed a comfortable 3-0 win over Club Tijuana at the Estadio Azteca in November.

Club Tijuana were expected to clinch a play-in spot last season because the side looked promising and delivered many unexpected results during the Apertura 2023 campaign. The club beat the likes of Atletico de San Luis, Toluca, and Tigres UANL in a season that started with a narrow opening-day loss against Pumas UNAM.
The bookmakers and other experts will label Club America as the favorites in this fixture. The bookmakers have even backed them to go all the way and win a 15th Liga MX title at the end of this Clausura 2024 season. Last season, the 14-time champions finished the regular season with 40 points after winning 12, drawing four, and losing just one game.
On paper and on the pitch, the Club America squad is miles ahead of Club Tijuana’s roster in terms of consistency and quality. The biggest concern was consistency, but Club America managed to keep building on the winning momentum until they finally reached the promised land after a five-year wait. In this fixture, the visitors are expected to clinch an easy victory.
Since 2011, these two teams have locked horns on 25 occasions in Liga MX. Unsurprisingly, Club America is dominating this fixture with 14 wins in their bag. Meanwhile, Tijuana has only registered five wins, with the other six ending in draws.
Alex Zendejas, Jonathan Rodriguez, and Alvaro Fidalgo were on target for Club America in the final quarter of the game against Tijuana last season at Estadio Azteca to give the hosts a comfortable 3-0 win. The visitors were reduced to ten men after Kevin Balanta was sent off.
When these two clubs faced each other in Tijuana’s backyard in Apertura 2022, the hosts registered a stellar 2-0 win. Lisandro Lopez and Joaquin Montecinos scored in each half to clinch a colossal win over Club America, ending a six-game winless run against them in Liga MX.
Going up against the defending champions on the opening day of any top-division league fixture is a tough ask. Many players in the squad lack match fitness, and a harrowing loss on day one will not set the correct tone for the rest of the season.
Defeating Club America is improbable, not impossible. However, the hosts will play it safe and will be content with a draw as well. There have been no new additions to the roster, and Tijuana are still playing under Miguel Herrera.
The Mexican coach narrowly missed out on the knockout round last season, but the target will still be to reach the playoffs this Clausura 2024 season.
Carlos Gonzalez finished as Tijuana’s top goal scorer last season after scoring nine in 16 appearances. He started the season well, scoring in the first four games of the Apertura 2023 campaign.
The momentum dropped towards the end of the season as he fired blanks in the final four games of the regular season. Gonzalez will be eager to end this goal drought and start the new season in the same way he started the last campaign.
Tijuana has the toughest task on opening day, but at least they are playing in their own backyard – a place where they lost just two out of nine games in the Apertura 2023 season. They picked up 19 points at home.
However, the away record is something Tijuana will need to work on. They played eight on the road last season and won none of them. The club drew one and lost seven. Hence, Herrera will be pleased to start the new campaign at home.
After winning the Apertura 2018 title, Club America was in a strong position, and the experts had backed them to win more titles in the following years. However, the club caved on multiple occasions and squandered the opportunity to lift a record-extending 14th league title.
The agonizing wait finally ended after five years when Andre Jardine’s men enjoyed an almost flawless regular season and playoffs to lift the Liga MX trophy. However, it will be important to retain that winning momentum in this season.
The expectations are sky-high for Club America and the team will certainly not want another long trophy drought.
In the Apertura 2023 semifinal, Club America demolished San Luis 5-0 in their own backyard. With an incredible advantage, the club was able to field a second-string side in the second leg and suffered a 2-0 defeat at home.
That was only the second defeat of the season for the 14-time champions. Incredibly, both their defeats came at home. On the road, Club America played ten games, winning six, drawing four, and losing none.
In December, Club America faced European giants FC Barcelona in a friendly. Although it was not a full-strength Barcelona side, it featured players like Joao Felix, Frenkie De Jong, Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski, and more.
Club America won that friendly 3-2, with linchpin Julian Quinones bagging a brace before Henry Martin came off the bench to score the winning goal in the 82nd minute. The outcome must surely have provided the perfect boost for Club America before the new season.
