Puebla have lost four, drawn one, and won one of their six matches this season. The campaign started with two back-to-back losses against Monterrey and Necaxa. In the third round, they split the points with Toluca after a 1-1 draw before dropping all three against Santos. The club’s first win of the season came against Mazatlan earlier this month. However, Puebla could not build on the momentum and lost 3-0 against Pumas in their last match.
Pachuca have established themselves as title contenders this season after a string of positive results. The seven-time Liga MX champions have won five of their first seven games of the Clausura 2024 season. They have beaten the current table-toppers, Cruz Azul, and defending champions, Club America. The other three wins came against Atlas, Tijuana, and Club Leon. The only two defeats for Pachuca came against Pumas and Monterrey.
Pachuca are firm favorites to win this encounter. Puebla finished five places above Pachuca in the Apertura 2023 table, but the circumstances are different now. Pachuca are the best attacking side in the league, and it will be tough for the Puebla defense to keep the attack at bay.
The two clubs have clashed 27 times in Liga MX. Pachuca has the better record with 14 wins, while Puebla has only won five times. The remaining eight games have ended in draws, including the 1-1 that came last season in Pachuca’s backyard.
Lucas Di Yorio scored the opening goal for the hosts in the seventh minute, and Kevin Velasco netted the equalizer in the 12th minute. It was an end-to-end affair featuring an aggregate of 35 shots, but the defenses were on top, and the scoreline remained unchanged.
The last time Puebla hosted Pachuca in Liga MX was in the Apertura 2022 season. Jordi Cortizo and Martin Barragan gave the hosts a 2-0 lead. However, Nicolas Ibanez bagged a brace in the final quarter of the match to clinch a point.

Estadio Cuauhtemoc has been a happy hunting ground for Pachuca in Liga MX. The encounters have been nightmarish for the hosts. In the last ten meetings between these two clubs at the venue, Puebla has only won once, and that victory came in the Apertura 2015 season.
Five matches have ended in stalemates, while Pachuca has emerged victorious on four occasions. The chances of Puebla ending this miserable run at home against Pachuca are relatively low because of their recent form.
Meanwhile, Pachuca are in fiery form, and keeping them away from the penalty area will be extremely difficult.
Another aspect that swings the advantage in favor of the visitors is that Puebla have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last ten matches. Their last shutout came against Toluca at the start of November.
Sebastian Olmedo and Gaston Silva have not been prolific in defense, and the opposition attack has capitalized on that vulnerability and sneaked multiple goals past the Puebla defense.
In an effort to boost their attack, Puebla signed Santiago Ormeno on loan from Chivas Guadalajara. Since his arrival in January, the striker has only made three substitute appearances and scored one goal.
The Peruvian is eager to replace or start alongside the team’s current primary striker, Lucas Daniel Cavallini, who has also not hit his stride yet as he has only scored two goals in six appearances.

After losing narrowly against Monterrey over a week ago, Pachuca were desperate to bounce back instantly, but their next game was against the formidable Club America. However, the seven-time Liga MX champions kept their composure and snatched the win at home.
Coach Guillermo Almada will be extremely pleased with his team’s performance but will not want complacency to creep into the team in the next match only because they are up against a relatively weaker team.
The schedule also seems quite supportive, as Pachuca have a string of less-challenging games coming up over the next few weeks.
Erick Sanchez’s brace helped Pachuca scrape past Club America. The midfielder has now scored three goals and assisted two in seven appearances. The 24-year-old has become a pivotal part of the team, playing right behind a prolific attacking line.
In the Apertura 2023 season, Sanchez scored four and assisted two in 14 appearances. If he retains his current form, the midfielder will surpass his goal contributions tally of last season.
Pachuca defeated Cruz Azul in the first match of the Clausura 2024 season, and that came on the road. That win is Pachuca’s only away win of the current campaign. Since then, the club has been on the road twice and has lost both matches.
The two away defeats came against Pumas UNAM and Monterrey. Now playing on a happy hunting ground, Pachuca must start gaining momentum on the road by winning the match against Puebla.
