Necaxa were one of the two undefeated teams in the Clausura 2024 season after nine games. However, their 11-game unbeaten streak in Liga MX, comprising seven stalemates, ended this past weekend when the club conceded a late winner against Mazatlan and lost 2-1 at Estadio El Encanto. Everything went downhill for the visitors in that match as they were reduced to ten men before the break after Fernando Arce picked up two bookings in three minutes. Diber Cambindo failed to keep his penalty on target in first-half stoppage time. He scored in the second half from open play, but goals from Andres Montano and Gustavo Del Prete sunk Necaxa.
While Necaxa experienced defeat after a long time, San Luis tasted victory in Liga MX after a long, searing wait. The club started the season well after registering two back-to-back wins. However, everything went downhill after San Luis lost six and drew one of their next seven Liga MX games. The tormenting run ended this past weekend when the club secured a resounding win over a ten-man Puebla side. The visitors were reduced to ten after just 16 minutes when Fernando Navarro was sent off. After that, goals from Vitinho, Sebastien Lamonge, Benjamin Galdames, and Yan Phillipe guided San Luis to victory.
Necaxa will be eager to pick up points again, while San Luis will be desperate to add another win to gain momentum in the league and stay in the play-in spots. Both teams could cancel each other out and share the spoils when the dust settles.
This encounter will be the 12th Liga MX clash between Necaxa and San Luis. The latter has an opportunity to instate parity in the head-to-head record of this fixture because Necaxa have won it five times, while San Luis have emerged victorious on four occasions. The match has ended in a stalemate on just two occasions.
None of the last seven encounters between these two clubs has ended in a draw. San Luis walloped Necaxa 4-0 when the two sides met at Estadio Alfonso Lastras Ramirez last season. After the dismissal of Ricardo Monreal in the 39th minute, the visitors were reduced to ten and then went on to score two own goals after allowing Unai Bilbao and Leo to score.
The loss against Mazatlan came on the road for Necaxa. The hosts have played five away matches so far, winning only once and drawing three. They have a similar record at home but have won two out of five games, and Estadio Victoria has not been breached yet.
Coach Eduardo Fentanes’ primary objective will be to make his side lethal at home. Necaxa will try to dodge as many defeats at home as possible. A positive result against San Luis will extend the unbeaten home streak in Liga MX to eight games.
Necaxa scored 18 goals in 17 games during the regular season in the Apertura 2023 campaign. This season, a goalscoring average of 1.5 per match has taken their goal tally to within three of last season’s total with seven games in hand.
There are no concerns in the final third for Fentanes. The club needs to fix their leaky defense that has kept just two cleansheets this season.
Diber Cambindo could have bagged a brace in the last match but had to settle for just one goal after the striker sent his shot from the spot wide. The on-loan Colombian has scored four goals in his last five appearances.
In nine appearances this season, Cambindo has scored five and assisted two goals, becoming a vital figure for Necaxa in the opposition penalty area.

Securing a positive result against Necaxa will be crucial for the visitors because they have lost four out of the last five away games in the current Clausura season. San Luis have won just six out of their last 30 Liga MX away games.
In the last four away games, the San Luis have fired two blanks and scored an aggregate of two goals. They ended a long, barren run, but that was on home territory. Facing Necaxa on the road will be a big challenge.
San Luis’ top scorer, Leo, missed the match against Puebla this past weekend. The Brazilian striker suffered a slight injury in the game against Queretaro last week.
Leo scored four goals in nine appearances and picked up one assist. The team did not miss him against Puebla but his absence could be felt against Necaxa if he is not fit enough to play.
Javier Guemez has recently been involved in multiple goals for San Luis. The midfielder scored in the six-goal thrilling draw against Tijuana before doubling his goal tally against Queretaro.
Guemez pocketed his first assist of the season against Puebla after he set up Lamonge for San Luis’ second goal of the match. The 32-year-old will be looking to make more goal contributions against Necaxa.
