Club León vs Club Tijuana have always been close contests, and this one will not be any different. Both sides have not been at their best this season, but it is the away side who need a win at all costs.
Leon are likely to rest their top players and start with the fringe players. They will just be looking to give the players who have not featured regularly some minutes under the belt while also giving the starting XI a rest ahead of the knockout stage.
Club Tijuana are all but set to miss out on the playoffs, unless things go their way. They will need to go all out for the win and hope that a couple of teams above them drop points.
The last time these two sides met, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. Victor Dávila opened the scoring for Leon in the 23rd minute, but the goal was canceled out by Lucas Rodríguez in the 59th minute. The Clausura fixture ended in both sides sharing the points despite Tijuana dominating the game.
The last time Leon secured a win over Tijuana was in the Apertura meeting last season. They dominated the game from the start and took the lead in the 26th minute via William Tesillo. David Barbona had his penalty for Tijuana saved in the 42nd minute, while Angel Mela converted his penalty in the 90th minute for Leon. Fidel Martínez pulled one back for the away side in the last minute of the game, but there was no time for another attack.
Club Tijuana do not have to look back a lot to check on their last win over Club Leon. They sealed a comfortable 2-0 win in the Clausura meeting last year despite playing with 10 men for the final 10 minutes.
Mauro Manotas handed them the lead in the 7th minute, and they had to wait until the 95th minute to get the second. Miguel Sansores was sent off in the 82nd minute, but they still managed to hold their lead and eventually doubled it to collect all three points.
Club León did not make the best of starts in the league this season and had just one win under their belt after five matches. Things got worse as they had just two wins after 10 matches and things did not look good.
However, they have done well in the last six matches and collected four wins. That has seen them jump in the table and seal the play in the playoffs with a game to spare.
Leon are 9th in the table right now and a win over Tijuana would see them jumping above Puebla and Guadalajara to 7th. However, they would need both sides to drop points as they are a point behind the duo.
The lowest Leon can finish this season is 12th in the league and that is if the three teams below them in the table right now win on the final day.
Their good run to end the season started with a win over the defending champions, Atlas. Paul Bellón, Lucas Di Yorio, Federico Martínez and Yairo Moreno scored to help them take a 4-1 lead before Julián Quiñones tapped in Altas’s second in the final minute after his penalty was saved.
Club Necaxa stunned them and won 3-2 in the next match, but that did not stop Leon from bouncing back quickly. They edged out 1-0 wins over Juarez FC and Tigres UNAL before Cruz Azul defeated them 2-1.
In the last match before the international break, Leon sealed their playoff spot with a win over bottom-placed Queretaro. Lucas Di Yorio scored in the first minute to make a wonderful start for the home side, but Ettson Ayon Calderon leveled things up in the 15th minute.
Victor Dávila ensured Leon took the lead with them at halftime, while Yairo Moreno sealed the win in the 93rd minute.
Club Tijuana were on a good run this season, with four wins and two draws in their first 9 matches of the season. They were one of the sides touted to seal the top 12 spot with east, but things went south quickly.
Tijuana are now winless in their last seven matches and have lost five times. They now need a win at all costs on the final day of the season, but that alone would not be enough for them to seal a playoff spot.
Tijuana need Juarez FC, Mazatlan and Atletico de San Luis to drop points to have any chance of making it to the top 12. If any of these sides win, that will end the campaign of Tijuana, and their match against Leon would be a dead rubber affair.
The shocking poor run started after Tijuana’s win over Cruz Azul. They were beaten by Queretaro, the bottom-placed side, and it broke the players’ confidence. The win was the only one secured by the rock bottom side this season and that was a tough one to take for the Tijuana players.
The 2-0 defeat was followed by another with the same scoreline, this time to Santos Laguna. Things got worse as Monterrey secured a 3-0 win and left Tijuana in a state of bother.
With the defense leaking goals and the attack toothless, Tijuana needed a big result against Atletico de San Luis as the two sides were battling for the final playoff spots. However, they could not break each other down and ended up sharing points after a goalless draw.
Tijuana’s poor form continued and this time, Guadalajara took full advantage. Franco Di Santo ended the 4-match goalless streak for the home side, but goals from Roberto Alvarado and Luis Olivas helped the away side seal the win.
Tijuana were handed an early penalty against Pachuca, but Lucas Rodríguez had his effort saved by Oscar Ustari. That came back to bite them dearly as the home side scored six past them in the game, with Alexis Canelo scoring a consolation early in the second half.
Tijuana were once again held before the international break when they hosted Club Necaxa. Brian García opened the scoring for the away side, before Federico Lértora leveled things up right at half time. Both teams failed to score in the second half and the match ended in a draw.
