Goalless draw is a likely result this week as the match will be a tight contest given that Club Leon and Atlas are in poor form.
Club Leon and Atlas are struggling for points this season and will be keen on taking advantage of each other’s poor run. The match is expected to be tight as both sides will be desperate not to make a mistake and hand the game to their opponents.
The last meeting between these two sides was in Clausura earlier this year, and that game ended in a draw. Ángel Mena scored from the spot in the 22nd minute to give Club Leon the lead, and they held onto it until halftime.
The momentum shifted after the break, and Atlas switched gears to equalize soon. Edgar Zaldívar scored the goal in the 50th minute to level things up on the scoresheet, and the game remained 1-1 until the final whistle. Both sides had the same number of shots in the game despite Club Leon having 59% of the ball.
The last win for Atlas against Club Leon came in the second leg of the Apertura final last year. They won 1-0, with Aldo Rocha scoring the lone goal of the match in the 55th minute. Things were level on aggregate at the end of extra time, and the game went into the penalty shootout.
Aldo Rocha missed his kick in the shootout, but luckily Fernando Navarro and Luis Montes had their penalties saved by Camilo Vargas. Atlas won 4-3 in the penalties and went on to become champions.
Club Leon’s last win was in the first leg of the final, and it was a dramatic late win. Luis Reyes handed Atlas the lead in the 11th minute before Victor Dávila leveled things up in the 37th minute.
The match remained 1-1 until the 65th minute, when Julio Furch restored the lead for Atlas. Their lead lasted just 13 minutes this time, and Club Leon were level through Ángel Mena. The home side were handed a late penalty in the game, and Mena made no mistake in scoring his second and his side’s third to seal the 3-2 win.
Club Leon missed out on a place in the Clausura playoffs because of goal difference. They could have sealed their place in the top 12 with one win in their last five matches, but only managed to get two points and lost thrice.
They started well in Apertura and defeated Atletico de San Luis away from home in the opening game week. Lucas Di Yorio scored the later winner in the 93rd minute after Byron Castillo’s own goal helped San Luis cancel out Federico Martínez’s opening goal for Leon.
Lucas Di Yorio was the hero in the next match as well as he helped them make a stunning comeback to share points with Pumas UNAM. Trailing 3-0 and a man down in the 52nd minute, things looked set to be one-way traffic after Eduardo Salvio scored for the away side.
However, Di Yorio had other plans and pulled a goal back a minute later. That sparked the confidence in the players, and Joel Campbell made it 3-2 six minutes later. With over half an hour left in the match, Club Leon were confident of getting something from the game, and Di Yorio scored the equalizer with 11 minutes left. The home side tried to go for the win in the end, but both sides failed to trouble the scoreline.
They drew with Puebla and GD Guadalajara in the next two matches before their poor run started. Toluca handed them their first defeat of the season after Daniel Álvarez scored the lone goal of the match in the 90th minute.
Club Leon did well to bounce back with a dramatic win over Club America, which saw Ángel Mena scoring a penalty in the 105th minute of the match as there were 12 minutes added on! Leon had taken the lead twice in the game, but Henry Martín scored a brace for the away side to make it 3-2 at the end.
However, since that win, Club Leon have been in terrible form. They have lost their next four matches, which started with a thrashing at the hands of Monterrey. The league leaders won 5-1 at home, and Leon’s confidence sank.
Losses to Mazatlan, Santos Laguna, and Pachuca followed, which has seen them sitting 16th in the league table.
No player is injured or suspended, but Paul Bellón and Byron Castillo have four bookings each and will miss the next game if they are booked against Atlas.
Atlas did well to win the Apertura and Clausura but are now in poor form and could miss out on the playoffs. They need things to improve drastically to have any chance of making it to the top four and qualifying for the quarterfinals directly.
Atlas’s season started off in the worst possible way as they were beaten by Cruz Azul in the Supercopa Liga MX. They were beaten in the penalty shootout, and that itself broke the players’ confidence before they started the Liga MX season.
In their opening game, they were up against Club America and were held to a goalless draw. They were lucky to come off with a point as the home side dominated the game but failed to score.
They were then beaten by Toluca, who took a 3-0 lead inside the first 15 minutes. Jesús Ocejo and Aldo Rocha scored for Atlas but they still ended up losing 3-2.
They got their revenge over Cruz Azul for the Supercopa defeat by edging a 3-2 win over them in the league. However, that win could not kick start their season, and it was followed by a hattrick of losses.
Tigres UNAL, Club Tijuana and Santos Laguna defeated them to make it four losses in five matches. They bounced back to defeat Queretaro 3-1, but once again could not carry the momentum into the next match.
They drew with Guadalajara in the following week, while Juarez managed to beat them 1-0 at home. Last week, Atlas did well to get a draw against Puebla in a game that was well-balanced.
They are currently 14th in the league table – 12 points off league leaders Monterrey and 2 points off the final playoff spot occupied by Juarez FC.
Mauro Manotas remains out injured, while Aldo Rocha will be back only next month. Anderson Santamaría is at the risk of a suspension as he has four bookings so far.
