Both sides suffered defeats in the opening weekend of the 2024 Apertura season. Club America kicked off their new campaign on the wrong foot, squandering the opening match with a 2-1 setback against San Luis on the road. Las Aguilas dominated the ball possession inside the 90 minutes with 64 percent. They managed to fire 10 shots toward the net with six hitting the target but were only to breach the keeper once.
Meanwhile, Queretaro opened the Liga MX season with a 2-1 defeat to the hands of Tijuana. Dating back to the prior Clausura tournament, Queretaro have now lost their last five matches. The Gallos Blancos were badly outplayed in every aspect last weekend, getting outshot 18 to nine, and only controlling the ball for 37 percent.

Upfront it was a confident start for Henry Martin who scored taking three shots towards the target. The 31-year-old managed to create two chances also in his 90-minute display. The versatile midfielder Alvaro Fidalgo will be the focal point to operate the middle of the pitch once again for Club America. In 154 appearances with Las Águilas, Martin has registered 11 goals and 21 assists.
Posting the club's lone goal last weekend was the striker, Samuel Sosa. Appearing in 67 minutes of play, he recorded two shots towards the keeper. The Venezuelan has played in 15 matches with the club across all competitions, totalling four goals in the process. The Gallos Blancos will be counting on Sosa to bag timely goals and help the club improve from last year's 10th-place finish in the Liga MX table that saw Queretaro get bounced out of the play-in game.
Helping at the back, Omar Mendoza will need to be the rigid defender who came up clutch in numerous instances. As a club in last season's Clausura, Queretaro only conceded a team total of 21 goals, and Mendoza's play was one of the key reasons. He’ll have his hands full Friday night against a hungry side.
The defending champs of the two previous Liga MX seasons don’t want to start the current campaign off to a winless after two matches. The title challengers opened their last game with an early lead and let it slip away. This will be Las Aguilas only home Liga MX home fixture till late August due to the upcoming Leagues Cup. It can’t be disputed Queretaro are a defensively sound club but think Club America will shine through with the quality upfront on this roster.
