No matter which way you look at this match, all signs point to a win for America.
If we’re ignoring numbers and stats for just a second, there’s no overlooking the biggest Liga MX news of the last week regarding America’s unauthorized substitute sitting on their bench. Due to this infraction, their latest win was controversially removed, likely reinvigorating and motivating the side to gain three points back this weekend that could bring them back to the top of the table.
As for those numbers and stats, there’s also no ignoring the fact that Pachuca only have three points — fewer than any other team so far this season. Although stranger things have happened in Liga MX, it might take a near-miracle for Pachuca to avoid a defeat here.

In order to truly understand the context of this game, we have to talk about the controversy surrounding America.
During the last few days, Las Aguilas have made headlines after Liga MX’s Disciplinary Committee found them guilty of using an unauthorized player, Federico Viñas, in their recent 2-0 win over Atlas.
So wherein lies the controversy if America had a player at the game who wasn’t supposed to be there? It’s the fact that the unauthorized player never even took part in the match.
With Viñas not included in the official gameday roster but seated on the bench, America had technically broken a rule — regardless of whether he played or not. That said, many expected a loose interpretation of the rule because he had in fact not played. That turned out to not be the case. The league followed through with a strict ruling, removing their three points and handing them over to Atlas.
If that isn’t a massive motivating factor to rightfully clinch a victory in their next game, I’m not sure what is. America should be fired up for this game, and even if they aren’t hitting all of their targets, they should be able to easily knock over a Pachuca squad that have been catatonic over the last couple of months.
There’s a reason why Pachuca fans have recently hung up banners around town that criticize their club. Seven weeks into the season, no Liga MX team has scored fewer goals or has collected fewer points than Los Tuzos.
Most importantly, Pachuca are the only side remaining without a single win in 2021.
It’s a dreary moment for the organization that was supposed to be a dark horse in the new year. With striker Mauro Quiroga in the picture, the Argentine was set to be a missing piece of their attacking puzzle.
Now, it’s not only Quiroga missing clear-cut opportunities but others in support as well as they’ve looked hapless in the final third.
Were it not for the ruling that took their victory away, America right now would be on a three-game winning streak and a five-match undefeated run. Quiet progress has been the plan for new manager Santiago Solari, and regardless of the regulations removing their recent points, there’s no doubt that the Mexico City giants have continued making improvements.
Striker Henry Martin has been regaining his energy, midfielder Sebastian Cordova is slowly living up to his high potential, and in net, goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa has yet to allow more than one goal in a game so far this season. Momentum is undoubtedly building.
As for their upcoming opponents, they’re completely on the other end of the spectrum.
It’s unfair to point fingers at just one player within an entirely struggling roster like Pachuca’s. Manager Paulo Pezzolano deserves serious criticism, and on the field, there are countless figures who are standing in the shadow of their former selves as they trot around for 90 minutes.
Nonetheless, Quiroga does share a good deal of responsibility. Week in and week out, the striker is missing chance, after chance, after chance in front of the net. Quiroga is tied for second overall in the league when it comes to total shots so far in the 2021 Clausura, and yet, he hasn’t scored since his first game of the season.
To make matters worse, no player has also hit the woodwork more often than Quiroga who has hit it three times in just seven appearances…
