Club America tasted defeat for the first time in this Clausura 2024 season after Pachuca defeated them 2-1 last weekend.
Mazatlan FC dodged defeat at the death last weekend against Chivas Guadalajara after scoring an equalizer in the tenth minute of second-half stoppage time.
When these two clubs clashed in the Apertura 2023 season, Club America staged a comeback and beat Mazatlan 2-1 at Estadio de Mazatlan.

Last weekend, Club America lost a Liga MX game in the regular season for the first time since the opening day of the Apertura 2023 season, when FC Juarez stunned the 14-time league champions in their own backyard. As things stand, Club America is fifth after winning four of their seven games so far. They dropped a couple of points against Necaxa and Monterrey before dropping all points against Pachuca.
The struggle for Mazatlan FC in the Mexican top division is consistent. The club has won just one out of seven games so far. They have drawn two and lost four. The solitary victory for Mazatlan came against Atlas FC almost two weeks ago. The two draws came against Club Leon and Chivas Guadalajara. The four losses were against San Luis, Toluca, Cruz Azul, and Puebla. As things stand, Mazatlan is sitting in 13th place.
A wounded lion is more dangerous than a hungry lion and that is the situation Club America is in right now. The loss against Pachuca will not sit well with Andre Jardine’s side and they will be desperate to get back on the pitch and make things right. Lucky for them, they will be up against a weak Mazatlan side. Hence, the bookmakers have backed the defending champions as strong favorites.
Besides its recent form, Mazatlan will receive no psychological backing from the history books either. The head-to-head record between these two clubs is dominated by Club America. The 14-time Liga MX champions have won six out of the seven encounters, leaving Mazatlan with a solitary win.
Mazatlan’s last and only win over Club America came at the Estadio de Mazatlan in the Clausura 2022 season. Gonzalo Sosa and Miguel Angel Sansores scored for the hosts before Juan Otero pulled one back for the hosts in the 93rd minute. The scoreline remained unchanged until the full-time whistle.
Since then, these two clubs have met in Liga MX three times and Club America has emerged victorious on all occasions. In those three games, the defending champions have scored 11 goals and conceded just two. The game ended 6-0 in favor of the hosts when Club America hosted Mazatlan last time.
After winning a record-extending 14th Liga MX title at the end of the Apertura 2023 campaign, Club America has looked a bit sluggish on the pitch in multiple games this season. The club was unstoppable last season, but there have already been several hiccups in this Clausura campaign.
The goals-per-game ratio is also dropping, as Club America has only the 11th-best goals-per-match average. Jardine will deploy a strong team against Mazatlan to bring Club America back to winning ways, spruce up the club’s statistics, and bring them back into the top four.
Club America had one of the most prolific attacks last season, with Henry Martin and Julian Quinones running riot. This season, the former is yet to get off the mark, while the latter has scored just two goals in six games.
Meanwhile, Diego Valdes scored two in five appearances, and Pachuca loanee Illian Hernandez has yet to score a goal. He has made five appearances, and two of them have been as a substitute.
Club America was not very active in the transfer market but did rope in two attackers on loan. One is Hernandez, and the other is Javairo Dilrosun, who has arrived from the Dutch club Feyenoord.
The 25-year-old has only made two Liga MX appearances since his arrival and is yet to gel with his teammates on the pitch. The match against Mazatlan would provide the perfect stage for the winger to nab his first Liga MX goal.
It will be extremely interesting to see what tactics Coach Ismael Rescalvo deploys against Club America in the next game. While the experts and bookmakers have picked the defending champions as the clear favorites, Mazatlan could still have something up their sleeve.
Mazatlan has already held Club Leon and Chivas Guadalajara to frustrating draws this season. Against Chivas, Rescalvo’s side was trailing 2-0 until the 87th minute. Luis Amarilla bagged a brace after that and rescued a vital point for his side.
Mazatlan’s last away win in Liga MX came in October against Atlas. That game ended 3-1 in favor of the visitors. After that, the club has been on the road five times, and they have tasted defeat on every occasion.
Ending a dismal run on the road against the defending champions is an improbable goal. However, under the management of Rescalvo, Mazatlan will not play for a draw, but in the end, if they do get one, it will be a vital point for the club.
There are seven players on Mazatlan’s injury list. Bryan Colula is experiencing physical discomfort and is doubtful for the next match. Josue Coleman and Jose Maduena are also doubtful because of their respective injuries.
Lucas Merolla has been out with a knee injury since September and is expected to return in April. Nicolas Benedetti’s season is over after suffering an ACL injury, while Roberto Meraz and Ventura Alvarado are also out.
