In the last five games, Club America have drawn two and won three. The two draws have come in the form of 2-2’s against Santos Laguna and Puebla FC. Their first win of the season came in the 6-0 thumping of Mazatlan FC. In the last two games, Club America have beaten Necaxa and Atletico de San Luis.
Club Tijuana have drawn three of their last five encounters in the league. After drawing three games in a row against Tigres UANL, Pumas UNAM and Club Necaxa, Club Tijuana nabbed a narrow win against Atletico de San Luis but ended up losing their latest match against CD Guadalajara last week.
Last season, Club America finished at the top of the table and their goal this season will be no different. After winning their last two games, the momentum is with them and they have players who are capable of pulling the club past Club Tijuana effortlessly. This could turn out to be a comfortable win for the hosts.
There have been a total of 23 Liga MX encounters between these two sides. Club America have won 12 of those, while Club Tijuana have won five. Six games have ended in a stalemate. In the reverse fixture, goals from Lisandro Lopez and Joaquin Montecinos helped Club Tijuana end their six-game winless streak against Club America.
In the last five Liga MX encounters between the two sides, Club America have been triumphant on four occasions. At the Estadio Azteca, the two sides have clashed 11 times in the league. Club America have won eight of those games. Two games have ended in draws,
Club Tijuana’s only win in Club America’s backyard came over ten years ago, in the Apertura 2012 season when a solitary goal from Cristian Pellerano downed the ten men of Club America after Paul Aguilar was sent off.
Club America are the most successful side in Liga MX after winning the league title 13 times. Last season, they came close to adding a 14th one to their cabinet but were beaten in the playoffs.
As last season ended in disappointment, the new Clausura season got off to a dismal start after Club America drew four out of their five opening league games, as they dangled in the middle part of the table before the side bounced back with two back-to-back wins.
As things stand, Club America are only one of two unbeaten sides in the league this season. The other one - Tigres UANL - will be a major title contender this season. Another win will help Club America climb further up the table and close in on the summit.
The home advantage will be with Club America in the next game. This is an important aspect of the fixture because the 13-time Liga MX champions have not lost at home in the last 21 games. They went the entire Apertura 2022 season without losing a single game at home.
The last time a side took three points against Club America at the Estadio Azteca was in the Clausura 2022 season when CF Pachuca beat them. Club Tijuana will need a very strong mentality and an extremely good performance on the pitch to break this record.
Despite dropping points at the start of the season, Club America have scored the highest number of goals in the league so far. Averaging 2.4 goals per match, the 13-time champions have scored 17 goals in seven games.
Out of these 17 goals, Henry Martin has been responsible for 11 of them. The striker has scored nine goals and assisted two in the seven games he has featured in. The 30-year-old bagged a brace in the last match against Atletico de San Luis.
To try and play for a win against Club America in their own backyard is going to be an ambitious dream for most sides this season, especially the ones that are near the bottom of the table. The Club Tijuana attack does not look formidable enough to penetrate Club America’s defense.
At the other end of the pitch, the defense will have a tough time trying to keep Henry Martin at bay. So, Club Tijuana could opt for a defensive approach and probably switch from a 4-4-2 formation to either a 5-3-2 or a 5-4-1.
Bringing in an extra central defender might help Club Tijuana deal with the constant threat of Martin and Jonathan Rodriguez. Astute man-marking in defense can frustrate Club America and leave them vulnerable on the counter.
Apart from the one-sided history of this fixture, the recent form does not aid Club Tijuana’s cause either. The club has won one out of seven league games this season so far. Apart from that, Club Tijuana have not won an away game in their last seven attempts.
Their last away win in Liga MX came at the midway point of the Apertura 2022 season when they beat Cruz Azul 2-1. Former striker Franco Di Santo scored the winning goal in that match. After that, Club Tijuana have lost four and drawn three away games in the league.
It will be a near-impossible task to change that statistic in the next game against Club America and even in the two away games after that as they face Santos Laguna and CF Monterrey. Club Tijuana could get that streak-ending win against Mazatlan FC on the road in April.
In seven games, Club Tijuana have only scored five goals. Two of those five goals are own goals. The other three have been scored by Alexis Pedro Canelo, Federico Lertora, and Lisandro Lopez. Club Tijuana’s top scorer last season, Lucas Rodriguez, is yet to get off the mark.
After Rodriguez, Edgar Lopez also scored a couple of goals for Club Tijuana last season alongside Franco Di Santo. Both players have left the club as Club Tijuana are going to face Club America with a goals-per-match average of 0.7 goals.
