Over the past couple of months, Club America have gained the desired momentum for the knockout phase. After losing their first and only game of the season against Pachuca in the beginning of March, Club America have enjoyed an unbeaten streak of seven games. They have won five and drawn just two games during this stint. Interestingly, both draws came in their own backyard.
Consistency has been lacking for Atletico de San Luis all season. The club has failed to secure even a single set of back-to-back wins this season. In their last five Liga MX games, They have lost two, drawn one, and won two. One of those victories came in the previous round against Club Leon. Atletico de San Luis dodged defeat in their last two fixtures and will need to repeat a similar feat if they want to progress further.
Club America have won 13 Liga MX titles, while Atletico de San Luis have won none. Club America possess strong momentum and a desire to go all the way, while their opponents lack the flair. All aspects indicate that Club America will win this tie comfortably.
The two teams have met 15 times in Liga MX, and the record is almost completely one-sided. Club America have won 11 out of 15 of those games, while Atletico de San Luis have clinched just one win against the 13-time champions. Three games have ended in draws.
The solitary win that Atletico de San Luis have against Club America came recently, and it came at the Estadio Azteca in the last Clausura season. In a shocking display, the visitors led 3-0 when the clock struck 90 minutes. Goals from Roger Martinez and Henry Martin at the death made it 3-2, but the hosts could not complete the comeback.
The last time these two sides met in the Liga MX playoffs was in the 2010 Apertura season. In the first leg, Atletico de San Luis held Club America to a goalless draw, but in the second leg at the Estadio Azteca, the 13-time champions reigned supreme with a 4-1 win.
The 2023 Clausura season got off to a shaky start for Club America, as they started with three consecutive draws in their first three games of the season. Five games into the season, the Aguilas had four draws and one win.
However, the side recovered well and snatched nabbed crucial wins to move towards the summit of the table. In the 2022 Apertura season, Club America finished at the top of the table. This time around, they were not able to repeat the feat.
They finished second, six points behind league-leaders CF Monterrey. They even failed to match their points tally of the Apertura season, finishing four points shy of it. But, with just one defeat all season, Club America will certainly charge for their first title since Apertura 2018.
The playoffs will be two-legged fixtures, but in the game against Atletico de San Luis, Club America’s concerns could be lower than usual. Even if the side somehow falters in the first leg, they will be strong favorites to turn things around in the away leg.
This season, Club America's only loss in the league came at the Estadio Azteca against Aperura 2022 champions CF Pachuca. Apart from that, they have won four out of nine home games. On the road, the Aguilas have won five of eight games and lost none.
Henry Martin featured in every league game for Club America this season. An impressive display in the final third helped the striker finish with 14 goals and 5 assists. This performance helped the 30-year-old clinch the Golden Boot.
The striker finished two goals clear of CF Monterrey’s Rogelio Funes Mori and Atlas FC’s Julian Quinones. However, the season is not done and dusted for Martin, who will be eyeing more goals and assists in the knockouts.
The overall and recent form of Atletico de San Luis has made them the underdogs in this fixture. The club missed out on playoff football in the Apertura season but barely made it this time around. However, their journey could come to an end in the quarterfinals.
Only a few statistical advantages could boost the squad’s morale ahead of the crunch quarterfinal encounter against Club America. Recently, Pumas UNAM held the Aguilas to a draw in their own backyard, and Queretaro FC did it on opening day.
That will be the primary target of Atletico de San Luis in the first leg. In the second leg, home advantage will be with them, and at home, Atletico de San Luis have only lost once in eight games in the league. Coincidentally, that loss came against Club America in February.
Another couple of statistics will pile more pressure on the visitors in the first leg of the quarterfinal. While the home form of Atletico de San Luis has helped them nab a playoff spot, their form on the road has been abysmal.
The club has lost seven of the nine away games this season. However, they did win on the road in the last knockout fixture against Club Leon. But, against the top-four opposition, Atletico de San Luis have been weak and have lost three games, drawing only against CD Guadalajara.
Regardless of the team they face, Atletico de San Luis will not be the top title contenders this season. Liga MX is no stranger to surprising results and major upsets, but Atletico de San Luis’ squad lacks the quality to go all the way.
Even if the team somehow manages to scrape past Club America, it will be next to impossible for them to clear the next two hurdles. While Atletico de San Luis will work hard to cause an upset, reaching the quarterfinals will be a good season result.
