After the draw against Toluca last weekend, Chivas Guadalajara’s winless streak was extended to six games. During this troublesome run, the 12-time champions have lost against Santos Laguna, CF Monterrey, Club America, and Mazatlan FC. The other two games against CF Pachuca and Toluca ended in draws.
Atlas FC have been in better form than their next opponents but stuttered last weekend when they dropped all points at home against a struggling Puebla side. Before that match, Atlas beat defending champions Tigres UANL and high-flying FC Juarez. They also beat Queretaro FC but lost against San Luis right after that.
The game is expected to be a tightly fought, full-contact contest. Chivas have the home advantage but have failed to win their last three at Estadio Akron. Meanwhile, Atlas’ two out of the last three outings have resulted in all three points. The bookmakers have backed the hosts, but it seems the visitors will come out on top in this encounter.
These two clubs have clashed 35 times in Liga MX since 2010, and Chivas Guadalajara have the better head-to-head record with 14 wins under their belt. Atlas FC have won nine matches, while 12 games have ended in draws.
The two teams met each other thrice last season. The first encounter came during the regular season at Estadio Jalisco when both sides settled for a point after a 3-3 draw. Julian Quinones bagged a brace, and Jonathan Herrera scored for Atlas FC. Meanwhile, Roberto Alvarado, Carlos Cisneros, and Alexis Vega were on the scoresheet for Chivas.
The other two meetings came in the playoffs, where both sides secured a 1-0 win at home, but Chivas advanced due to their better rank in the table.
In the 2023 Clausura season, Chivas Guadalajara were chasing a record-equalling 13th Liga MX title. They were one step away from achieving the feat but fell prey to Tigres UANL in the finals earlier this year.
The venture to add another title to the cabinet started from scratch this Apertura season, and it started well, but now Chivas have failed to win any of their last six games. They are dangling perilously close to the last playoff qualification spot and must win the next game to be safe.
In the first three home games of the season, Chivas picked up all available points, displaying exceptional attacking and defensive prowess.
However, the goals have dried up, and complacency has crept into the side over the past few weeks, during which the club has failed to win any of their last three games at Estadio Akron.
Former Pachuca midfielder Erick Gutierrez returned to Liga MX this year after a five-year hiatus during which he played in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven.
Chivas signed the midfielder in July this year and has been quite effective in midfield. However, the 28-year-old will miss the next match due to a foot injury.
Atlas FC Can Prey On Vulnerabilities
Liga MX is an unpredictable league where underdogs have a history of shocking title contenders just by exploiting their weaknesses. Atlas FC will be the underdogs in this match, and they have been in this place before and have come out on top.
The visitors will be out to avenge their 2023 Clausura playoff loss when they face Chivas. Less than three weeks ago, Atlas FC shocked Tigres UANL when they blanked the defending champions 2-0 before stunning FC Juarez in their own backyard.
Atlas FC secured a crucial loan signing of Tigres UANL striker Jordy Caicedo in July this year. Since his arrival, the Ecuadorian has scored six goals in ten games across all competitions.
The 25-year-old has scored four goals in seven league games so far, and three of those have come in the last three matches. Caicedo will be eager to extend that tally
While the attacking department is doing its job, a little concern will be revolving around Atlas FC’s midfield.
The visitors are still without Brian Lozano, who suffered a thigh injury in the middle of September. The Uruguayan has provided two assists in five matches so far, and will be a big miss for Atlas FC in this crucial encounter against Chivas.
