Pachuca are desperate to end their slump and reinstate themselves as top title contenders this season. After losing the opening game of the new season, the club secured three successive victories over Atlas, Tijuana, and Leon. All three victories came at Estadio Hidalgo before Pachuca were on the road again. Last weekend, their visit to Monterrey did not go well, as they lost 3-2.
Club America are unbeaten in the league after winning four and drawing two of their six Liga MX games this season. Their title defense campaign started with a string of three comfortable 2-0 wins over Tijuana, Queretaro, and Juarez. The winning run came to a halt against Necaxa with a goalless draw. After that, Club America secured a stalemate against Monterrey and returned to winning ways last weekend with a 1-0 win over Club Leon.
The resurgence of Pachuca is quite evident, and so is Club America’s resilience. The advantage would have been with the defending champions if they were playing at home, but since the match is on Pachuca’s playground, the advantage swings in favor of the hosts. However, Club America will be a formidable opponent for every team this season. Hence, the chances of this game ending in a stalemate are high.
There is a lot of history between these two strong clubs. The aggregate title count between Pachuca and Club America is 21, and these two forces have collided 34 times in Liga MX since 2010. Club America have registered 15 wins, while Pachuca are not far behind with 13 victories.
Only six encounters have ended in stalemates, with the last one coming in the Clausura 2022 playoff semifinal first leg. Since then, these two clubs have met four times, each winning twice with a clean sheet.
Last season, Henry Martin, Alex Zendejas, Julian Quinones, and Jonathan Rodriguez were on the scoresheet as Club America breezed past Pachuca with a 4-0 scoreline at Estadio Azteca. In the previous Clausura season, Pachuca demolished Club America 3-0 in their own backyard, with goals coming from Javier Lopez, Jesus Hernandez, and Roberto de la Rosa.
A fantastic three-game winning run for Pachuca ended last weekend when the club suffered a 3-1 defeat on the road against Pumas UNAM. It was a surprising outcome because Pachuca held more of the ball and attempted more shots in the match.
Pumas attempted eight shots, out of which four were on target, while Pachuca hit their opponents with a barrage of 26 shots, of which eight were on target, but only one sneaked past the keeper.
The seven-time Liga MX champions are expected to come out all-guns-blazing in the next match and cause several problems for Club America. They could not penetrate Pumas’ backline, but that did not stop the Pachuca attack from trying the same against the defending champions.
Coach Guillermo Almada will be extremely pleased with his team’s performance in the final third. The Pachuca attack has been a menace to the opposition defenses. However, things are not looking good at the other end of the pitch.
Scoring at an average of over two goals per match, Pachuca’s concession rate is also high. They have scored 14 goals in six games but conceded a whopping 13. Only Club Leon have conceded more goals than Pachuca at this point.
After scoring four goals in the first four games for his new club, Jose Salomon Rondon was quiet in the last two matches. He failed to register a single contribution in the matches against Leon and Monterrey.
This could raise a minor concern because if the striker misfires against Club America and Pachuca continue to be sloppy in defense, it could spell trouble for the hosts.

Defending their record-extending 14th Liga MX title will be a priority for Club America this season, but their focus will also be on other competitions. Before registering a win against Leon last weekend, Club America lost in a CONCACAF Champions Cup first-leg encounter.
Their opponents are Nicaraguan side Real Esteli FC, who Club America will face again in the second leg at home just three days before their match with Pachuca. Squad rotation will be key to avoiding fatigue, and coach Andre Jardine must devise a tactic accordingly.
When there is fixture congestion, injuries are a coach’s worst nightmare. Jardine has to deal with this problem as Club America have three significant names on their injury list.
Henry Martin, Kevin Alvarez, and Richard Sanchez could all miss the next match due to their respective injuries, and that is something Pachuca could capitalize on.
Julian Quinones scored ten goals and registered five assists in 20 appearances for Club America last season. He finished as the club’s top scorer in his debut season with the defending champions after moving from Atlas FC in June 2023.
After scoring and assisting in the first game of the season against Queretaro, Quinones has gotten quiet and fired blanks in the last four matches. He did score in the Champions Cup encounter, but his goal tally in the league is still at one.
