CF Monterrey vs Cruz Azul Predictions

CF Monterrey vs Cruz Azul Predictions

CF Monterrey are the heavy favorites to seal all three points as their Apertura season resumes on Sunday. The five-time Liga MX champions started the new campaign with a 1-1 draw against Atletico de San Luis. They followed that disappointing result up with two back-to-back wins and two successive clean sheets. The first came against Atlas and the second was against Mazatlan FC. In the 2023 Leagues Cup, CF Monterrey pulled off spectacular results against strong sides before finishing fourth-best in the competition.

Troubles are mounting for Cruz Azul as they find themselves at the wrong end of the table after going without a win in the first five games of the Apertura season. They started the season with two losses on the bounce against Toluca and Tijuana. During the break, they started the Leagues Cup voyage with a loss against Inter Miami and then secured passage to the knockouts with a win on penalties over Atlanta United. They were eliminated by Charlotte FC in the first knockout round. As the Apertura season resumed, they held Santos Laguna to a draw before losing against Pachuca earlier this week.

CF Monterrey’s spirits will be bolstered by their amazing run to the semifinals in the Leagues Cup. They won all their games up until the semifinal, beating Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders, Portland Timbers, Tigres UANL, and Los Angeles FC in the process.

Previous Meetings

The two teams have faced off 35 times across all competitions. Cruz Azul leads the head-to-head record against CF Monterrey with 12 victories. The five-time Liga MX champions have only won on ten occasions, with 13 encounters in draws.

However, CF Monterrey have the advantage this time around as they haven’t lost in the past nine matches against Cruz Azul, winning six of them and three ending in draws. CF Monterrey have not lost to Cruz Azul at home since November 2018 and haven’t lost at all since December 2018.

The odds are strongly stacked in favor of CF Monterrey to resume the Liga MX campaign on a winning note. Cruz Azul have lost three of their last five encounters against CF Monterrey, and drawn two.

An Ideal Start for CF Monterrey This Season

CF Monterrey finished the last Liga MX Clausura season at the top of the table, with 13 wins out of 17 games. They were unfortunately knocked out of the playoffs in the semifinals by arch-rivals Tigres UANL in the Clasico Regio.

They have started the Liga MX Apertura 2023-24 season strongly, winning two of their matches and drawing the third. They are placed fifth in the table with seven points and also have two matches in hand.

In the Leagues Cup, CF Monterrey won all five of their matches in regulation time. The club is eager to nab a trophy this season after missing out on their sixth domestic title last season and coach Fernando Ortiz’s men will hope to resume the Liga MX campaign with a win.

CF Monterrey Are Clinical in The Final Third

CF Monterrey’s attacking team of Joao Rojas, Omar Govea, and German Berterame are in amazing form this season, with a total of three goals and three assists among them in the Liga MX in as many games.

Berterame had a great run in the Leagues Cup, finding the back of the net five times in the first five games and providing one assist. However, after suffering a fracture in the left foot, he will be out for a few months. New arrival Sergio Canales bagged goals against Tigres and Los Angeles FC, and Ortiz will be hoping he can deliver in the Liga MX as well.

The Hosts Are Hungry for a Trophy This Season

CF Monterrey have had unfortunate luck when it comes to trophies in recent years. Their last trophy came two years ago and Ortiz’s men will be hungry to get their hands on some silverware this Apertura season.

CF Monterrey made it to the playoffs of both the Apertura and Clausura phases in the Liga MX last season, however, failed to reach the finals in both. In the Leagues Cup as well they won five back-to-back matches to make the semifinals but were ousted by Nashville SC. The near misses will add fuel to CF Monterrey’s fire to get going in the current Apertura season.

Cruz Azul Hoping to Put an End to Their Shocking Slump

Joaquin Moreno will hope his team can end their winless streak by getting a positive result against one of the strongest sides of the league. Moreno’s men have lost four of their last five games in the Apertura season so far.

Cruz Azul have won only one of their last nine games. That solitary win came against Atlanta United in the Leagues Cup group stage, but they needed penalties to secure the victory. The odds are completely against Cruz Azul, who have averaged 0.8 goals per game this season, and conceded two or more goals per game.

In addition, Cruz Azul have failed to register a victory in their last nine encounters against CF Monterrey, losing six times and drawing three. The club will be desperate to extend their winning head-to-head record against CF Monterrey.

Tweaking Tactics Not Paying Off for Cruz Azul

Cruz Azul lost three matches on the bounce as the new Apertura season commenced. They then acquired their first and only point of the season in a draw against Santos Laguna after the Liga MX campaign resumed.

However, their draw did not guide them towards another positive result as they lost the next match against Pachuca, who were also struggling with form since winning the previous Apertura title. Cruz Azul won the Liga MX Clausura title in 2021, but since then, nothing has worked for them, as their poor run continues.

Struggles Increase for Cruz Azul on the Road

Cruz Azul have failed to win away against CF Monterrey in their last 13 attempts. The last time they beat CF Monterrey away was back in 2013. Currently, Cruz Azul have not recorded a victory in any of their last seven away games.

The odds are firmly against Cruz Azul in this fixture as they travel to CF Monterrey’s home ground, who haven't lost their sole home game this season. They have also failed to score a single goal in their last two away matches.
