Atlético San Luis are unbeaten in their last two games in the Clausura season, but still pretty badly placed overall and will be looking to avoid another defeat. They have picked up just 2 wins in their 8 matches this season and are sitting 16th in the table.
Puebla, the league’s lowest-ranked team in terms of player value, are continuing their dream run this season and are on top of the table and yet to lose a match. They will be looking to keep their sensational run going and pick up another big win on Sunday. They are aiming to go 5 points clear of 2nd placed Pachuca – who have also been a popular underdog story this season and have a game in hand – and will be the favorites going into the game on Sunday.
The last time these two sides faced in the Clausura, Puebla picked up a convincing 4-1 win. However, in their most recent meeting during the Apertura season, Puebla were held to a 2-2 draw–back in September.
Atlético San Luis have been in poor form this season. The side from San Luis Potosí have won just two games this season, and they both came last month.
They started February with a win over Club America. Although the scoreline ended 3-2, both the goals for San Luis’s opponents came after the 90th minute, and after they had already been reduced to 10 men. Unai Bilbao opened the scoring early in the game and San Luis were mostly pinned to their own half through the course of that game.
They did attack on the counter though, and they did effectively. Abel Hernández and Germán Berterame scored in quick succession after the second half started and put the game to bed.
At that point, it looked like San Luis had gotten the much-needed confidence boost to kick start their season, but they suffered back-to-back defeats again. Toluca edged out a 1-0 win at San Luis de Potosi, before Tigres UANL came from behind to beat San Luis at home.
Since then, San Luis have had something of a turnaround, first beating Monterrey away from home in one of the more unlikely results from this season, and then securing a 2-2 draw against Guadalajara, although they had led 2-0 for more than half that match.
Last weekend, San Luis were among the teams whose matches were postponed, and that will have given them a lot of recovery room because they were scheduled to play 2 matches in 4 days. With that equation out of the picture, and the time to consider their game against the table-toppers for just a little longer, San Luis will be desperate to try and pick up something from this game and get into double-figures on the points table – something that could propel them at least five or six places upwards if some other results also go their way.
Puebla are the only unbeaten side in the league at the moment.
They started the season with a draw against the now bottom-placed side, Club America, a result that was considered them punching above their weight at that point. Since then, the two clubs’ fortunes cannot be more contrasting. Puebla have drawn just two other games since that and won 6 – 4 of them on the road.
Last weekend, Puebla were away at Cruz Azul and managed a convincing 3-1 win against in what was slated to be one of their more difficult fixtures on the schedule. But such is the form and momentum with this team at the moment that they matched Cruz Azul in midfield, with the possession split 52-48, marginally in the home side’s favor, but only making a notional difference; Azul managed 395 passes at an accuracy of 82 percent, with Puebla not too far behind with 377 passes at an accuracy of 81 percent.
The big difference came up front. The table-toppers ended up with 15 shots in the game – four more than Azul – and got over half of them on target. Fernando Aristeguieta’s dominant performance in front of goal was a big reason behind this, with the striker grabbing a hat-trick for the away side that was spread across the game after it had begun in the 7th minute.
The hat-trick took him to 5 goals from 9 games this season, making him Puebla’s highest scorer for the season at the moment, and third in the Clausura behind Nicolas Ibanez and André-Pierre Gignac.
Puebla’s march towards holding onto first place is looking stronger and stronger, with even the mention of how much the odds were stacked against them at the start of the season now starting to feel reductive, and doing no justice to the fact that this isn’t a flash in the pan anymore. They’re unbeaten in 9 games but also tied as the best-attacking team – 17 goals scored – and the best defensive team, with only 7 goals conceded.
