In their last five games, Atlas FC have lost four and drawn one match. They lost three on the trot against Club Puebla, Chivas Guadalajara, and Mazatlan FC before holding Club Leon to a draw. In the last match, Atlas FC failed to score and went down against Club Tijuana.
CF Pachuca have lost just one out of their last seven matches. However, the record becomes less prolific because they have only won two of those seven games and drew four. They secured a point against Chivas Guadalajara, Necaxa, Tigres UANL, and Club Puebla.
Despite their poor run, the bookmakers have backed Atlas to win this encounter. This is primarily because of Pachuca’s dismal away form and their performance over the past couple of seasons. The hosts are favorites to end their abysmal run against the 2022 Apertura champions.
There is a lot of history between these two clubs, who have clashed 28 times in Liga MX since 2010. Pachuca has the better record with 12 wins, while Atlas is not far behind with ten wins. Only six encounters have ended in a stalemate.
When these two sides met in the 2023 Clausura season, Atlas swept the visitors away. Goals from Jonathan Herrera and Julio Cesar Furch, coupled with a brace from Julian Quinones, added three points to Atlas' tally as Pachuca could only muster a consolation goal via Cristian Arango.
Pachuca’s last win at the Estadio Jalisco came in the 2022 Clausura season. Roberto de la Rosa scored the only goal of the match in the 87th minute, as the visitors clinched all three points. The hosts were reduced to ten men in the first half after Jairo Torres was sent off.
The regular season of the 2023 Apertura campaign is inching toward its conclusion. As things stand, Atlas are 13th with 16 points. The club is two points behind FC Juarez, who are in tenth, occupying the final playoff qualification spot.
The final three games of the regular season will be must-win encounters for Atlas if they want to qualify for the knockouts. After Pachuca, the team has a challenging fixture against the resurging Pumas UNAM side. The regular season will conclude with a game against Necaxa.
Atlas will certainly glance back at the past and look at how they breezed past Pachuca when these two clubs clashed last time at the same venue.
However, all three goalscorers who got their names on the scoresheet that evening have left the club, as the hosts are now looking for new heroes to secure all three points.
For the past couple of weeks, Atlas have been without their star winger, Brian Lozano. The Uruguayan picked up an injury against Chivas earlier this month and is out for a lengthy period.
The club will also be without midfielder Aldo Rocha, who is still suspended after his straight red against Mazatlan over a week ago. This has created a void in the Atlas midfield.
After winning the 2022 Apertura, Pachuca extended their league title tally to seven. Since then, the side has failed to build on their success and aim for another league glory. The struggle has continued this season as well, as Pachuca have won just three out of 14 games so far.
Level on points with their next opponents, Atlas, Pachuca’s playoff qualification hopes are still alive, but the club’s pursuit may end if they fail to get a positive result in this game. The final two regular season fixtures of Pachuca are against CF Monterrey and Club Tijuana.
To strengthen the team, Pachuca brought in five new faces for the 2023 Apertura season. However, the new players have not delivered what was expected of them.
Lucas Di Yorio has only scored two goals in 12 appearances, while David Terans has only made five starts so far and has provided no goal contributions.
The home advantage in this encounter is with Atlas FC. However, in the last 14 encounters between these two teams at Estadio Jalisco, the hosts have only won five times.
Two of those five wins have come in the last two games. However, Pachuca were undefeated in five straight games at the Estadio Jalisco before that, winning three and drawing two.
