Group E To Conclude With Bang as Four Teams Fight It Out

We should be in store for a dramatic afternoon of Euro 2024 soccer tournament on Wednesday as Group E comes to an end. All four teams - Ukraine, Belgium, Romania and Slovakia - are level on three points with one round of fixtures remaining. That means each side can still finish first, second, third or fourth.

The permutations are numerous yet there is one way for the four teams to make things simple. The winners of Ukraine vs Belgium and Slovakia vs Romania will go through to the round of 16 no matter what. Things would get a little more complicated if one or both matches are drawn.

A draw in this match would be enough to send Belgium through to the knockout phase either as group winners or runners-up. But a draw could leave Ukraine in third or fourth depending on the other result. That is why they cannot afford to play for a point here.

Belgium, too, will be going for the win. First, they will be keen to build some momentum ahead of the knockout phase. Second, it increases their chances of finishing top of the group, which in theory would bring a kinder tie in the round of 16.

We should expect plenty of twists and turns on Wednesday. Supporters of all four Group E nations would be advised to watch the games unfold with a calculator in one hand and blood pressure tablets in the other.

Belgium’s Quality in Forward Areas Should Be Decisive Here

Belgium’s campaign got off to a poor start with a shock 1-0 loss to Slovakia, but they got back on track against Romania last time out. The Red Devils took an early lead through Youri Tielemans and continued to play at a high tempo thereafter, pinning Romania back in their own half.

The failure to score a second before the 80th minute led to a few nervy moments, but Belgium were worthy winners in the end. Domenico Tedesco’s side created the better chances on the day and, with Dodi Lukebakio and Tielemans among those introduced to the XI, they looked more balanced than they had done against Slovakia.

Tedesco is an astute tactician and his side lined up in a hybrid formation last time out. With the ball, Belgium were configured in a three-man defence with left-back Arthur Theate tucking in and right-back Timothy Castagne providing width higher up the pitch. When the Belgians ceded possession, they returned to a 4-2-3-1 shape.

The aforementioned Lukebakio is suspended for Wednesday’s showdown with Ukraine, so Leandro Trossard should return to the team. The absence of the winger is a shame for Belgium, who looked dangerous with Doku and Lukebakio - two speedy, tricky, one-versus-one specialists - either side of Romelu Lukaku.

Trossard and Lukakau did not appear to be on the same wavelength in the defeat by Slovakia, but a front three comprising that pair and Doku should cause Ukraine plenty of problems - especially when you consider Kevin De Bruyne is the main player tasked with supplying the ammunition.

Belgium will be keen to establish an early lead at the MHPArena and Tedesco will encourage his players to replicate the fast start against Romania. Ukraine will have to withstand some early pressure and, given the individual talent available to Belgium, we like their chances of finding the back of the net before half-time.

Ukraine’s Spirit and Attacking Output Give Them a Chance

Even if Ukraine do fall behind in Stuttgart, they should not be written off. Sergiy Rebrov’s side have tremendous character, resilience and belief - as they showed in qualifying. Ukraine gained six points from losing positions in their group, then came from behind to beat both Bosnia-Herzegovina and Iceland in the play-offs.

They were at it again a few days back, conceding the first goal to Slovakia but roaring back to win 2-1. Ukraine were poor for the first 30 minutes but were the better team for the remainder of that game, the result of which has left their fate in their own hands as they seek a knockout stage berth.

Ukraine certainly pack a punch going forward. Mykhailo Mudryk’s end product is still frustrating, but his speed in transition makes him a threat. Artem Dovbyk scored more goals than any other player in La Liga in 2023/24. Georgiy Sudakov is a talented young creator who has been linked with a move to some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The problem is at the other end. Ukraine conceded three goals to Romania on matchday one. They only shipped one against Slovakia but did look vulnerable at the back at times.

That is another reason to back Belgium to score goals in both halves. A strong offense versus a somewhat leaky defense usually has only one outcome.
