Spain vs England Euro 2024 Prediction

Spain Are Tournament’s Best Team but One More Job To Do

Spain have had to do things the hard way at this European Championship. Despite being drawn in the so-called group of death alongside Italy, Croatia, and Albania, la Roja were the only team at the tournament to win each of their first three games. Moreover, they did so without conceding a single goal, advancing to the knockout phase in style.

Minnows Georgia became the first team to breach the Spanish backline in the round of 16, but Spain bounced back to turn a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 victory. They then edged out host nation Germany in the quarters, as Mikel Merino’s header secured a 2-1 win in the penultimate minute of extra time. In the last four, Spain beat France by the same scoreline to advance to their first major final since Euro 2012.

Luis de la Fuente was not a well-known figure before this tournament, but he is one game away from joining Jose Villalonga, Luis Aragones, Vicente del Bosque in the small group of managers who have led Spain to glory on the continental stage. He has evolved the team’s style of play, adding more speed and directness to the side while retaining Spain’s long-held preference for midfield control and possession domination.

There is little doubt that Spain have been the best team we have seen at Euro 2024 Championship. But that does not matter now. If la Roja do not perform on Sunday, what went before will count for nothing. That is the message De la Fuente will have been trying to get across to his players this week.

Spain are, for good reason, the favorites with the best online sportsbooks, but that status brings its own pressures. How well the players handle the occasion will play a big part in determining the outcome of the final.

England Have Improved but Huge Challenge Lies Ahead

England have not been on Spain’s level up to now. They won their group unconvincingly, hanging on for a 1-0 victory over Serbia prior to draws with Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0). Things almost got worse in the round of 16, as Gareth Southgate’s side came within a whisker of losing to Slovakia. Only Jude Bellingham’s stunning equaliser in second-half stoppage time saved them, before Harry Kane notched the winner in extra time.

England were not much better against Switzerland in the quarters when a penalty shoot-out triumph sent them through. The Three Lions finally played some good soccer in the semis, but even then they needed a 90th-minute winner from Ollie Watkins to squeeze past the Netherlands. Whereas Spain supporters have enjoyed watching their team this summer, England have at times been booed by their own fans inside the stadium.

Yet Southgate’s side are now just one win away from becoming the first England team of all time to win a major tournament on foreign soil. England have never been crowned European champions before, a failure which reflects badly on one of the richest, most populous, and most football-obsessed countries on the continent. Now they have the chance to put that right.

The team does at least look more balanced in the 3-4-2-1 formation that Southgate introduced for the Switzerland match. And England will take belief from the fact they have got stronger as the tournament has gone on, hopefully peaking at just the right time.

Make no mistake, though: this is their biggest challenge yet. England have had a pretty kind route to the Euro 2024 final, especially when you compare their path to Spain’s. But all that matters from here is Sunday’s showdown in Berlin.

We May Need 120 Minutes or More to Find a Champion

Spain’s collective has functioned much better than England’s so far in Germany, but the latter have more standout individuals at their disposal. Spain are cohesive like a club side, whereas England rely much more heavily on moments of inspiration from their star players. That is why this final looks pretty evenly matched.

England have been slow starters of late, conceding the opening goal in the round of 16, quarter-finals, and semi-finals. It is easy to envisage Spain controlling the opening 25 or 30 minutes, with England on the back foot and forced behind the ball.

But Southgate’s side, for all their faults, cannot be accused of lacking grit and resolve. Time and time again at this tournament they have found a way back into games. So even if Spain have the better of this encounter, it is hard to rule England out. They also have more strength in depth than la Roja, whose bench is thinner in terms of quality.

Spain may end up putting on a show and cruising to victory, much as they did in a 4-0 defeat of Italy in the final of Euro 2012. More likely, though, is that extra time or penalties are required to find a winner. Go for a draw after 90 minutes.
