Late First-Leg Double Puts Real Madrid in Pole Position

Real Madrid had a shaky start to their Champions League campaign this year. Their first five outings in the league phase saw them defeated three times, as Lille, AC Milan and Liverpool got the better of the reigning champions. After the loss to Liverpool, Madrid were 24th in the standings - the final play-off spot. Things were looking precarious for Carlo Ancelotti and co.

Three consecutive victories put paid to many rival clubs’ desire to see Madrid fall at the first hurdle. Such is their improvement since then that Ancelotti’s charges are now the second-favourites to lift the trophy in May, behind only Liverpool. That is despite the fact that Madrid, unlike eight other teams, are not yet guaranteed a place in the round of 16.

The Blancos are certainly in pole position to advance from this play-off. Going into the latter stages of the first leg, Madrid found themselves 2-1 down to Manchester City. Yet goals from Brahim Diaz and Jude Bellingham turned the match on its head, giving Madrid the victory that, according to many observers, means they now have one foot in the last 16.

Ancelotti will not be taking anything for granted, however. A serial winner like him knows the importance of avoiding complacency. Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain might be able to relax a little after winning their first legs 3-0, but a 3-2 aggregate advantage is too close for comfort.

"I don't think the tie could have been settled here,” Ancelotti said after last week’s five-goal thriller. “We took a small lead, it was a good game for us. We have to be happy.”

After fielding a makeshift defense at the Etihad Stadium, Madrid hope to have David Alaba and Antonio Rudiger available for the return fixture. Jude Bellingham was sent off in a 1-1 draw with Osasuna on Saturday, but that red card does not affect the Champions League.

Manchester City Have a Massive Task in Front of Them

If his public comments are to be believed, Pep Guardiola has in effect conceded defeat in this play-off. According to the Manchester City manager, his team only has a miniscule chance of advancing to the round of 16 at the expense of Real Madrid, the 15-time European champions.

"The margin to win in Bernabeu in that position, everybody knows that if you ask before the game, the percentage to go through, I don't know, we arrive at 1 percent, or I don't know what," he said. "It will be minimal, but as much as you have a chance, we will try, that's for sure, you know?”

A 3-2 home defeat would have been a worse result when the away goals rule was still in place. As it is, any victory by a one-goal margin would be enough for City to force extra time. Of course, it is not easy to triumph at the Bernabeu by any scoreline, but Guardiola’s math looks a little off.

City’s confidence was boosted with a 4-0 thumping of Newcastle United at the weekend. Two winter signings stood out. Omar Marmoush was obviously the star of the show, scoring a first-half hat-trick to put the match beyond Newcastle before the interval.

Just as significant, though, was Nico Gonzalez’s display at the base of midfield. The former Porto man brought a sense of authority to the position that has not been present since Rodri’s injury. Both in and out of possession, Nico made a huge difference to City on Saturday. He will be essential to their attempts to get a foothold in the second leg.

Goals Are on the Cards at the Bernabeu on Wednesday

Real Madrid’s history in this competition seems to bring out the best in their players time and time again. It is almost as if extra belief can be generated from the iconic white jersey. Madrid have regularly mounted stunning comebacks in this competition down the years.

This time, though, they have a lead to protect. Ancelotti’s side will not sit back and play an all-out-defense game, but there is a slight danger of Madrid being caught in two minds. Manchester City, on the other hand, have no ambiguity: they must go for the win on Wednesday.

That could play into Madrid’s hands. For while City have the tools to hurt the Blancos, even if Erling Haaland misses out through injury, their opponents can do some serious damage in transition via the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Bellingham, Rodrygo and Vinicius Junior.

The first leg featured goals at both ends and five strikes in total. Clean sheets could prove equally elusive here. Back over 2.5 goals and both teams to score - this promises to be another highly entertaining affair.
