PSG Hit Their Stride at Promising Time but Still a Long Way to Go

Having made it their mission to win the Champions League and invested hundreds of millions of euros in pursuit of that aim, it would be somewhat ironic if Paris Saint-Germain finally went all the way in Europe’s principal competition in their first post-galactico season.

That term was first used to describe the Real Madrid team of the early 1990s and early 2000s. Florentino Perez embarked on a spending spree which brought numerous superstar players to the Spanish capital. But there was not enough consideration of balance and cohesion, and Madrid fell well short of expectations.

The same is true of the PSG side that contained Neymar, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe. On paper, that is one of the greatest front threes in soccer history. There was only one problem: soccer is not played on paper. PSG came up short in the Champions League and the three players ultimately moved on, with Mbappe the last to depart in July 2024.

After losing their star man last summer, this was expected to be a season of transition for PSG in Europe. When Luis Enrique’s charges were handed a difficult draw for the league phase, some fans openly wondered whether the team would even make the last 16. In the end they did that pretty impressively, beating Manchester City 4-2 and Stuttgart 4-1 to seal their spot.

Once again, PSG have been left cursing a draw which has paired them with the team that topped the league phase, Liverpool. Yet after an underwhelming start to the campaign ,the Parisians have hit their stride at just the right time. Liverpool are arguably the best team in Europe right now, but PSG’s chances of an aggregate victory should not be dismissed out of hand.

Liverpool Ready to Turn Their Attention to the Champions League

Not everything over the last few weeks has gone swimmingly for Liverpool. Arne Slot, you feel, will still be smarting over his team’s defeat by Plymouth Argyle, a second-division side, in the FA Cup. But in the Premier League at least, Liverpool have had a fantastic time of it of late.

One reason for that is their own form. The Reds have still only lost one league game all season. The weekend before last, they went to Manchester City and won 2-0. A few days later, the same scoreline saw them past Newcastle United, a team pushing for Champions League qualification.

At the same time, Arsenal (their closest challengers for the Premier League title) have really dropped off. The Gunners went down 1-0 to West Ham United in their last home match, before drawing 0-0 with Nottingham Forest in the recent midweek round of fixtures. The long and short of it is that Liverpool are now 13 points clear at the summit of the standings.

With the title virtually wrapped up and the FA Cup no longer a consideration, Liverpool’s attention is now divided between the Champions League and the EFL Cup. And although their team is already through to the final of the latter tournament, every Liverpool fan out there would happily sacrifice the EFL Cup if it guaranteed a seventh Champions League triumph.

Slot’s boys were magnificent in the league phase, winning seven out of eight games (and the only one they lost was a dead rubber). No one would relish facing the Reds in the knockout rounds.

If PSG are to advance over two legs, they will surely need to triumph in front of their own supporters. Anfield is one of the hardest opposition grounds to play at, particularly on European nights, and Liverpool are a force to be reckoned with on their own patch.

It should be pointed out that Liverpool have been beaten at home in the Premier League this term, whereas they have not suffered a single defeat on the road in the top flight. Slot’s side have experienced losses on unfamiliar soil three times in all competitions, however, a fact from which PSG will doubtless draw hope.

Liverpool are rightly the sportsbooks’ favorites to book a spot in the quarter-finals, but it is worth backing PSG to come out on top on home turf. They are playing some excellent soccer right now, and while many will point out that their dominance of Ligue 1 makes it hard to read too much into their domestic results, PSG were fantastic in that 4-2 victory over Manchester City.

Luis Enrique is a smart coach and the youthful energy of his team will give Liverpool plenty to think about. We still expect the Reds to make it through to the next round, but this rejuvenated PSG side has what it takes to emerge triumphant at the Parc des Princes. Go for a home win.
