  • The Ligue 1 2023/24 season begins on August 12 and will end on May 18
  • The campaign will feature 34 rounds of fixtures spread over more than nine months
  • Paris Saint-Germain are the defending champions after triumphing in Ligue 1 last term

The Ligue 1 2023/24 title winner will be determined by the 34 rounds of fixtures staged in France’s top division between 12 August 2023 and 18 May 2024.

Paris Saint-Germain, the country’s only superclub, are strong favorites to finish in the top spot. It would be a huge surprise if they did not, but Marseille, Lens, and Monaco will look to take advantage if the club from the capital endures a disappointing season.

Can anyone stop PSG? Take a look at the odds table below, before we explore the Ligue 1 2023/24 title winner in more detail.

Who Will Win the Ligue 1 2023/24 Title?

PSG are strong favorites to win the Ligue 1 title with the best online sportsbooks. Lionel Messi has departed and Kylian Mbappe faces an uncertain future, but PSG still have the strongest squad in the division by some distance.

Lens exceeded expectations last time out and they will be looking to push PSG close again. Marseille supporters would love to see their side stop their arch-rivals, while Monaco have also been widely tipped to finish towards the top of Ligue 1.

Lyon are potential outsiders but they would need plenty of good fortune to win the title. Lille, Stade Rennes, and Nice are rank outsiders and will instead be targeting European qualification.

Who Won the Ligue 1 2022/23 Title?

PSG won the Ligue 1 title in the 2022/23 season. Under the management of Christophe Galtier, they finished a point clear of Lens in the top spot after winning 27 and drawing four of their 38 encounters.

Despite their domestic success, PSG’s failure in Europe led to the dismissal of Galtier at the end of the campaign, with Luis Enrique now in charge at the Parc des Princes.

PSG, Saint-Etienne, and Marseille have each won 10 titles. Marseille’s best era came in the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the southern side finished on top of the table for four seasons on the bounce.

Saint-Etienne were the team to beat in France for much of the 1960s and 1970s. PSG’s dominance of the division is only a recent phenomenon, as we will explore below.

Monaco and Nantes have won eight titles apiece, but the latter have not got their hands on the trophy for more than 20 years. Lyon, meanwhile, won seven in a row in the 2000s.

Which Teams Have Won Ligue 1?

Ligue 1 was founded as a professional competition in 1930, although it did not get going for another couple of years. Before this, clubs competed in the French Amateur Football Championship, which got under way in 1893.

Including both eras, a total of 28 clubs have been crowned champions of France. If you only take the Ligue 1 seasons into account, 18 teams have won the title.

How Many Ligue 1 Titles Has PSG Won?

It might surprise younger readers to learn that PSG are only narrowly the most successful side in the French top flight.

The club was only founded in 1970 and was not a major force within Ligue 1 before the Qatari takeover in 2011. Up to that point, PSG had only won two titles.
