The action in Germany got under way on June 14 when the hosts faced Scotland in Munich. Each team played against every other side in their group, with the top two going through. As mentioned above, the remaining four places in the knockout phase were filled by the third-place finishers with the best record.
Italy were the champions at Euro 2020, which was held in 2021 after being delayed for a year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. They finished top of their group thanks to victories over Turkey, Switzerland and Wales.
That sent Roberto Mancini’s men through to the round of 16, where they needed extra time to get past Austria. Italy edged out Belgium 2-1 in the quarter-finals, before eliminating Spain on penalties in the last four.
That set up a final against England at Wembley Stadium. The Three Lions took the lead within seconds of kick-off, before Leanardo Bonucci equalised midway through the second half. There were no more goals in the rest of the match, with Italy going on to win on penalties to claim the trophy.
Germany was selected as the host of Euro 2024 six years ago, as they won 12 votes to Turkey’s four among members of the UEFA Executive Committee.
The tournament will take place in 10 stadiums across the country: the Olympiastadion in Berlin, the Allianz Arena in Munich, Signal Iduna Park in Dortmund, the MHPArena in Stuttgart, Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen, the Red Bull Arena in Leipzig, RheinEnergieStadion in Cologne, the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf, and Volksparkstadion in Hamburg.
The Copa America, South America’s flagship international competition, got under way in 1916. The first Asian Cup was held in 1956, a year before the Africa Cup of Nations began. Given the rich history of European soccer, it may surprise some to learn that their continental tournament did not start until 1960.
Henri Delaunay, an influential administrator from France after whom the European Championship trophy is named, first suggested a pan-European event in 1927, but it was only after he died that the competition kicked off. Only 17 nations entered the inaugural edition, with four qualifying for the finals. The Soviet Union were the first champions.
Twenty-nine teams tried their luck four years later, but again the finals were limited to just four teams. This remained the case right through until 1980, when eight sides came together in Italy to fight for the prize (West Germany ultimately claimed it, beating Belgium in the final).
In 1996 the tournament doubled its number of participants again, before UEFA sanctioned an expansion from 16 teams to 24 in time for Euro 2016. Due to the slightly awkward current format where one win is sometimes enough to advance to the knockout stage as a third-place finisher, there has been talk of increasing the event to 32 sides. No decision on that has yet been made.
Euro 2028 will take place in the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. Turkey had previously withdrawn its bid to focus on landing the rights with Euro 2032 together with Italy, while Russia’s petition to stage the event was rejected by UEFA due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
