England were the pre-tournament favorites to win Euro 2024 and the best online sportsbooks have not changed their mind. However, England’s status as the leading contenders as we prepare for the quarter-finals owes mostly to their position in the easier half of the draw.
Indeed, England’s credentials have not been advanced by the four performances they have delivered in Germany up to now. Gareth Southgate’s side played well for only 30 minutes of their 1-0 victory over Serbia on matchday one. They were then mostly disappointing in consecutive draws with Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0).
England nevertheless advanced to the knockout phase as Group C winners, but they were almost eliminated by Slovakia last time out. Only a stunning equalizer from Jude Bellingham in the last minute of second-half stoppage time denied Slovakia a 1-0 win. England went on to score the winner in extra time, but it was another unconvincing display.
Southgate’s side are still standing and they will see this tie as winnable. A potential semi-final against the Netherlands or Turkey would not exactly strike fear into English hearts either. But if they are to avoid defeat by Switzerland this weekend, England must improve across the board.
Southgate looks set to switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation for this match. Bukayo Saka is in line to move over to left wing-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold starting on the other flank. That would leave Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham as dual No.10s behind Harry Kane, who notched the winner against Slovakia earlier this week.
Will it be enough? Only time will tell, but something has to change. Southgate is a cautious coach at heart and it was a surprise to see him take so long to intervene in the Slovakia game. This time around, the manager needs to be decisive both before and within the game.

Pessimism was the predominant mood among Switzerland supporters heading into the European Championship. Murat Yakin’s men won only four of their 10 qualifiers and ended up finishing five points behind Romania. That did not bode particularly well for the tournament itself.
Yet since their first game against Hungary, Switzerland have been a pleasant surprise. They were comfortable winners in that contest, triumphing 3-1 to get up and running early on. Yakin’s side then had to match Scotland’s physicality in a 1-1 draw on matchday two, before the same result against Germany secured second place in Group A.
Switzerland actually came close to beating the hosts that night, only to concede an equalizer in second-half stoppage time. In hindsight, Niclas Fullkrug’s header might have been a positive development for Switzerland. Without it, they would be on the same side of the draw as France, Portugal and Spain.
Switzerland play like a club team. International sides are generally not as tactically sophisticated as their counterparts at club level due to vastly reduced training time. But the Swiss use an interesting approach. They employ a hybrid system: without the ball they line up in a 3-4-2-1, but this shifts to a 4-2-3-1 when they have possession.
Switzerland breezed past Italy in the round of 16, winning 2-0 after scoring in both halves. Much of the post-match reaction centered on Italy’s considerable shortcomings, somewhat understandably. But Switzerland were excellent and showed that no one should underestimate them for the remainder of the tournament, starting with England this weekend.
“'We played against Germany we were good, we played against Italy, also a big team, and why can't we beat England?” Yakin said in the build-up to this match. “We're in a good mood now. Let's see, it's a good challenge and my team is ready to have this big fight against England.”
With England poised to switch to a 3-4-2-1 formation, both teams are likely to be using the same shape on Saturday. When that happens, there are usually a series of one-versus-one battles across the pitch. Given England have more individual quality than Switzerland, that may work to their advantage.
On the other hand, Southgate is only pondering a 3-4-2-1 system because plan A has not worked. England have been working on their new approach for a few days; Switzerland have been mastering theirs for months on end. They are a well-oiled machine - and the same cannot be said for their upcoming opponents.
The main question mark over this Switzerland side is whether they have enough difference-makers in their team. That is not an issue for England, who have so much talent that the likes of Cole Palmer, Ebere Eze and Ollie Watkins cannot get a start.
Soccer is a team sport, though, and only one of these sides are more than the sum of their parts. Switzerland can cause a minor upset on Saturday by eliminating England from the European Championship.
