Copa America 2024 is an international tournament that will take place in the United States this summer
This will be the 48th edition of this competition which began back in 1916
Lionel Messi, Vinicius Jr. and Darwin Nunez will all feature in the tournament.
The 2024 Copa America gets underway on June 29 with the final scheduled for July 14 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.
The United States will host the tournament, with the defending Copa America champions in 2021 and reigning FIFA World Cup winners Argentina and Brazil are the favorites to lift the title, but in this article, we take a deep dive into who will finish as the top scorer at the upcoming Copa America? It was a historic year at club level personally for Lautaro Martinez. The Argentine helped lead Inter Milan to win their 20th title and get that historic elusive second star on next year’s kit. Martinez capped off his 2023-24 Serie A campaign as the capocannoniere (Serie A leading goal scorer) with 24 goals, was selected as this year's league MVP, and was selected as part of the Serie A team of the year. Considered as one of the best strikers currently in the world these are great odds to take him at with the resume he’s built up and four goals currently in the Copa America.
Liverpool’s number nine hit double figures in the EPL goal department for the first time in his young career. Nunez tallied up 18 goals across all 54 competitive matches the Uruguayan showcased. In the last stretch of the campaign, Nunez saw his playing reduced minutes, which hampered his stats as he went nine straight outings without a goal or an assist. However, Nunez was impressed when he’s been called up to his national team. The 24-year-old has recorded 13 goals in 28 international caps. Uruguay is one of the title contenders and arguably has the easiest group facing Panama and Bolivia, two teams Nunez can do damage too making him a solid option as the top scorer in the competition.
Playing in the shadow of Erling Haaland is no slight towards the young Argentine, Julian Alvarez still put together a respectable campaign in his second year in England. Across all competitions, Alvarez found the back of the net 19 times in 54 games with Manchester City. Alvarez sprung into the 2022 FIFA World Cup on a high for his country banging in three goals during Argentina’s historic title run. In 35 international caps, the 24-year-old has hit the score sheet eight times. Nobody will ever replace what Messi has done for his country on the pitch, but Alvarez is certainly capable of taking hold of this tournament and running away as the top scorer.
The winger Columbian shined in his performance against Costa Rica as his penalty kick led his nation to all three points. Diaz's goal from the penalty spot was the first of the tournament for the 27-year-old. In 54 international matches, the Liverpool player has found the back of the net 14 times. If Columbia can go on a run in Copa America, look for Diaz to lead the line up front carrying his nation.
Turning 37 years old this June, Lionel Messi is showing no signs of slowing down as one of the best to ever do it keeps on continuing writing his story. The Inter Miami product has bagged 23 goals in 27 appearances in all competitions played in his time in the United States.
With Argentina, he has found the back of the net 108 times in 177 international caps. The man has won it all accomplishing everything that’s been thrown in his path. Messi at Inter Miami is managing the amount of playing time he is receiving so fatigued legs shouldn’t be a factor heading into this competition. Lionel Scaloni's men are favored to lift the the title, so for Argentina to get to the final they will be playing the maximum amount of games which will give Messi more of an opportunity to walk away with yet another personal trophy.
As stated above Martinez had an astonishing year and he could cap off 2024 as the leading goal scorer in the tournament. In the 2021 version, Lautaro finished in second with three goals netted. Argentina could very well go the distance again and that means more opportunities for Martinez to score. Playing in Serie A he doesn’t get the mainstream attention he deserves but make no mistake he knows how to finish off his chances and took a giant step this year personally becoming the player Inter Milan thought he would be.
It was a two-way tie at the top as Lionel Messi from Argentina and Luis Diaz from Columbia finished with four goals each.
