Barcelona Have Treble in Their Sights in Flick’s First Season

When Hansi Flick was appointed as Barcelona manager last summer, few anticipated a treble-winning debut campaign. Yet with a few weeks of 2024/25 remaining, Barca are well positioned to win three trophies. One of them is already in the bag following a 3-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Copa del Rey final on Saturday.

It was an eventful encounter. Barcelona took the lead through Pedri in the 28th minute, but Madrid turned the match on its head with two quickfire second-half goals courtesy of Kylian Mbappe and Aurelien Tchouameni. Barcelona did not panic, though, and Ferran Torres made it 2-2 soon after. The Catalans then won the game in extra time through Jules Kounde.

Barcelona have a four-point lead over Madrid in La Liga, so they are strong favourites to claim the title too. The bookies also have Barca at the top of the betting markets in the Champions League, although you can quite easily make a case for any of the four semi-finalists to go on and lift the trophy from here.

Prior to this season, Barcelona had gone through a rough patch in Europe. They were dumped out in the group stage in successive campaigns, before going out in the quarter-finals last term. This is their first appearance in the last four since 2018/19, when Barca memorably fell victim to a stunning Liverpool comeback in the second leg.

They have been largely excellent in the tournament this season. Barcelona finished second in the league phase before defeating Benfica (4-1 on aggregate) and Borussia Dortmund (5-3) in the two previous knockout rounds. Inter is all that stands between them and a place in the final.

Inter Need to Ensure This Does Not Become a Nearly Season

Less than a couple of weeks ago, Inter were in the mix for a treble of their own. They were in pole position to win the Serie A title ahead of Napoli, as well as being the favourites to claim the Coppa Italia. A quarter-final triumph over Bayern Munich suggested they were genuine contenders in the Champions League too.

But Inter have gone off the boil since then, going four games without a win in all competitions. They were dumped out of the Coppa Italia by their rivals AC Milan last week. In Serie A, a 1-0 defeat by Roma at the weekend handed control of the title race to Napoli, who hold a three-point advantage in top spot and have an easier run-in, plus no distractions.

Inter have performed well in Europe this season. They finished fourth in the league phase, level on points with Barcelona but with an inferior goal difference. Inter only scored 11 times in their eight matches, but they conceded just once - a remarkable feat of defensive resolve given the high standard of the Champions League.

They then brushed Feyenoord aside in the round of 16, beating the Dutch outfit home and away, prior to that aforementioned success against Bayern Munich. Inter are the outsiders to lift the trophy according to the bookies, but that does not mean they are anything less than an excellent side.

The problem is, Inter’s form has deserted them at the crucial moment. Simone Inzaghi will need to use all his motivational powers to get his team back on track.

Barcelona Should Come Out on Top in Front of Their Own Fans

Barcelona and Inter played each other in one of the most famous Champions League semi-finals of all time back in 2010.

The Nerazzurri, led by Jose Mourinho, won the first leg 3-1 in Milan. Inter then had a man sent off early in the second leg at the Camp Nou, but a resolute defensive display saw them escape with a 1-0 defeat and a 3-2 aggregate victory. Mourinho, in his typically shy and retiring way, celebrated by sprinting onto the Camp Nou turf with his arm aloft.

A repeat of such drama  this time around would be welcome, although this tie will surely not be as highly charged. That does not mean it will not be engaging to watch Barcelona and Inter butt heads. This is a battle between an irresistible force and an immovable object. Barcelona are the Champions League’s highest scorers this term. No team has conceded fewer goals than Inter.

However, Inter’s recent form is concerning. Whereas Barcelona seem to be coming on strong at the business end of the campaign, Inzaghi’s team look to have run out of steam. It would take a massive effort for Inter to push back against the momentum that is working in their opponents’ favor.

Barcelona have won five and drawn one of their six home games in Europe in 2024/25. They have a fantastic chance to pick up a sixth victory at the Estadio Olimpic Lluis Companys on Wednesday. Go for a Barcelona victory in the first leg of the second Champions League semi-final.
