Back PSG to win. The Ligue 1 champions are arguably the best team in Europe right now and they can complete the job at Villa Park.

Aston Villa Need a Major Performance to Go Through to Semis

With 35 minutes on the clock in the first leg of this Champions League quarter-final, everything had gone to plan for Aston Villa. Their contain-and-counter strategy had allowed them to keep PSG at bay, before a quick break forward ended with Morgan Rogers tapping home at the back post to put Villa 1-0 up.

It was a goal that came against the run of play, but it gave Unai Emery’s side something to build on. If they had been able to hold on until half-time, perhaps Villa would have emerged triumphant. But the precocious youngster Desire Doue restored parity moments later, and by the 49th minute PSG were 2-1 up thanks to a fantastic goal from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

A 2-1 defeat would not have been a terrible result for Villa, but they could not quite hold on to that scoreline. In second-half stoppage time PSG struck for a third time, as Nuno Mendes kept his composure to beat Emiliano Martinez.

It was a significant goal. Emery attempted to play it down afterwards, insisting there is not much difference between 3-1 and 2-1, but it is difficult to agree with the Villa boss. PSG are sitting a lot more comfortably with a two-goal cushion as they prepare to head to England.

Villa retain hope, however, and they will draw confidence from the fact they are generally in good form. A 3-0 victory over Southampton at the weekend means the Parc des Princes defeat was the only time Villa have lost in their last nine outings in all competitions. They have a solid home record under Emery too, so this one is not over.

PSG Have Hit Their Stride as They Eye European Glory

In the first half of the season, hardly anyone had PSG down as potential European champions. The draw for the league phase of this tournament was not kind to Luis Enrique’s side, but their results were often unconvincing.

They won just one of their first five games in this season’s Champions League, and even that victory was a slender 1-0 triumph over Girona secured thanks to an own goal in the 90th minute. Simply reaching the knockout phase of the tournament was the main target for PSG back then. Now they are the sportsbooks’ second-favorites to lift the trophy behind Barcelona.

By all accounts, the turning point was a 4-2 success against Manchester City on matchday seven. PSG actually found themselves 2-0 down in that game, although they did not deserve to be. Still, they dusted themselves down to score four goals without reply in the final 35 minutes.

PSG have been flying ever since. In fact, their form since the turn of the year has been immaculate. They recently secured the Ligue 1 title having still not lost a top-flight game. In Europe, they eliminated a Liverpool team that had been the best team in the competition up until then.

Luis Enrique has done a marvellous job. This season was supposed to be transitional following the exit of Kylian Mbappe last summer. But the relative lack of experience in the squad has not been a burden in the slightest. In fact, PSG are using their youthful vibrancy to their advantage. Who knows how far it could take them.

Aston Villa Have Given Themselves Too Much to Do in the Tie

Emery is a master at knockout continental soccer. He has won the Europa League four times - that is not only more than any other manager in history, but more than any other club but Sevilla, with whom he lifted the trophy on three occasions. Emery also led Villarreal to the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2021/22.

Villa Park is guaranteed to be bouncing on Tuesday and that too could play into the home team’s hands. If Villa were to get an early goal to make it 3-2 on aggregate, the momentum would belong to them.

However, we have seen a resilience and steeliness to this PSG team already this season. Many teams would have wilted after going 2-0 down to Manchester City, but the Parisians came back to win 4-2. They lost 1-0 at home to Liverpool in the last 16, then went to Anfield to win 1-0 on the night and triumph on penalties.

On top of that, PSG have the tools to cause Villa genuine problems on the break. There will undoubtedly be more defending for Luis Enrique’s team to do in the second leg compared to the first, but that does not mean they will not create chances on the counter-attack.

PSG were vastly superior to Villa last week. This game will probably be closer, but PSG can win this one too. Go for a victory for the away team at Villa Park.
