Arsenal’s Defensive Nous Counts for a Great Deal at This Stage

Arsenal have endured a season of frustration in the Premier League. After finishing as runners-up to Manchester City in 2022/23 and 2023/24, you would have thought Mikel Arteta’s men would be best placed to capitalize on City’s collapse in form this season. Instead, Liverpool have taken advantage.

The Reds wrapped up the title on Sunday, but in truth the race has been over for weeks. Yet in some ways, this could still be the greatest season in Arsenal’s long and rich history. Having never before been crowned European champions, the Gunners are potentially three games away from winning the Champions League.

This competition has not dominated Arsenal’s thoughts in the Arteta era - until now. Winning a first Premier League title since 2004 was seen as the priority. But no one would be complaining if Arteta led Arsenal to continental glory instead.

A 5-1 aggregate defeat of Real Madrid in the quarter-finals felt like a coming-of-age moment for this team. Last season Arsenal were knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich. They were not necessarily inferior to Bayern 11 versus 11, but the German giants had their considerable Champions League heritage to fall back on.

That is why the victory over Madrid was so impressive. The Blancos are the Champions League team. They have won the tournament 15 times to Arsenal’s zero. They also have one of the most talented rosters in the world. Yet Arteta’s side beat them comfortably over two legs, winning 3-0 at home and 2-1 away.

Arsenal’s defensive nous has proved to be a major asset. Even without Gabriel Magalhaes, who missed both games against Madrid and is still sidelined through injury, the Gunners have been solid. If Arsenal can continue to keep the back door shut, a maiden Champions League triumph is in reach.

Paris Saint-Germain Most Impressive Side in Knockout Phase

After five games in the league phase, Paris Saint-Germain were struggling. They had won only one match at that point - and that 1-0 victory over Girona came courtesy of an own goal in the 90th minute. PSG were in very real danger of finishing outside the top 24 and thus falling at the first hurdle.

Then everything seemed to click. Luis Enrique’s team won three games in succession to rise to 15th and qualify for the play-offs, where they dismissed domestic rivals Brest 10-0 over two legs. PSG then deservedly knocked out Liverpool in the round of 16, prior to edging out Aston Villa in the last eight.

PSG dominated the first leg against Villa, a 3-1 win, and then went 2-0 up in the return fixture. But they were put under real pressure at Villa Park, shipping three goals to trim their advantage to one. PSG ultimately survived, but they were on the ropes towards the end.

They have not looked completely convincing since then. A narrow 2-1 triumph over Le Havre followed that second leg against Villa, before PSG were held to a 1-1 draw by Nantes. In their most recent encounter, Luis Enrique’s team lost their Ligue 1 unbeaten record after going down 3-1 at home to Nice. It was not the best preparation for this trip across the Channel to London.

PSG are still a force to be reckoned with. Like Arsenal, it is hard to read too much into their domestic results given the Champions League is now their sole focus. Indeed, Arsenal have not exactly been perfect in the Premier League of late either, dropping points against Everton, Brentford and Crystal Palace this month.

This Promises to Be a Fascinating First Leg in the English Capital

These two teams have already faced off this season. Arsenal were the winners back in October - and it was not really close. PSG lost 2-0 and were never really in the game. However, there is no doubt that the Ligue 1 champions have come on leaps and bounds since then.

This one is hard to call. It would not be at all surprising if the tie went all the way to penalties. Arsenal and PSG are very different teams, but they are evenly matched. Arsenal have the defensive edge, but the Parisians carry a greater threat in attack. The winner will be the side that strikes the better balance.

PSG’s shaky form and their 3-2 defeat by Aston Villa in the second leg of their quarter-final will have hit their confidence. As such, we should see a more reserved display from Luis Enrique’s men on Tuesday.

PSG saw how Arsenal put the tie beyond Real Madrid with a 3-0 victory in the first leg at the Emirates Stadium. They will not want to fall victim to the same sort of result.

All of which means that, while this promises to be an enthralling 90 minutes of soccer, it will not necessarily be a goal-laden affair. Go for under 2.5 goals.
