Two games in and we’ve already seen enough to know that TGL Golf will be an entertaining watch as it plays out over the next few months.
The regular season continues on Tuesday evening with Match 3 between New York Golf Club and Atlanta Drive GC.
New York (Xander Schauffele, Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick) lost its opening game 9-2 against The Bay GC (Ludvig Aberg, Wyndham Clark, Shane Lowry).
For their second outing, New York sits out double Major winner Schauffele, with Cameron Young joining Fowler and Fitzpatrick.
Atlanta goes with Patrick Cantlay, Billy Horschel and Justin Thomas - all winners of the FedExCup trophy - so their fourth member, Lucas Glover, will have to wait to get his debut.
One key so far has been the strategic use of the Hammer.
It can be played/thrown at any time to increase the value of each hole to two points. But only if the opponent accepts.
Knowing when and where to use the Hammer can prove a real momentum changer.
The match scores so far have been 12-1 and 9-2 and, from the stats produced, ‘Short Putting’ has been key.
LA won that category 80% to 25% when beating Jupiter 12-1 while Bay GC were 100% with their short putts compared to New York’s 25%.

Triples: Holes 1-9 - Each team of three playing in alternate-shot format
Singles: Holes 10-15 - One-vs-one, head-to-head competition for the entire hole. Each player from each team plays a total of two full holes
Cameron Young
Young has had a mixed start to the new PGA TOUR season, opening with an eighth place in The Sentry in Hawaii but missing the cut at last week’s American Express. He ranked 1st for Putting Average at The Sentry.
Matt Fitzpatrick
The Englishman started 2025 with 24th at The Sentry and was also able to get a first taste of the TGL. Fitzpatrick lost one of his two singles and halved the other. “I think getting used to the simulator, the shots, where you've got to hit it, I think I need to figure that out a little bit more. But it was a tough evening,” he said later, but also adding that he just didn’t play very well.
Rickie Fowler
Like Fitzpatrick, Fowler enjoyed the shot clock in his opening game, adding that he’d love to see it used on the PGA TOUR. But he noted that his team probably didn’t talk enough with each other, perhaps a result of being on the end of a big loss. Fowler made his first start on the PGA TOUR last week, finishing a promising 21st at The American Express, while he was the only New York GC player to win a singles point in their opening loss to Bay GC (he halved the other).
Justin Thomas
Thomas comes in fresh off a second place in The American Express where he ranked in the top 25 for all the main Strokes Gained categories, shooting 23-under. It followed a 26th at The Sentry where he’d closed with a 63.
Billy Horschel
Horschel has played all three events of the new PGA TOUR season so far and is slowly coming to the boil. In Hawaii, he took 51st of 59 at The Sentry before missing the Sony Open cut. But he shot a Friday 67 at the Sony and then added tied 21st at The American Express last week.
Patrick Cantlay
Cantlay will make his TGL debut full of confidence after following a 15th in The Sentry with a top-five finish in The American Express where he ranked 2nd for Strokes Gained: Off The Tee and 7th for Putting Average.
We don’t have too much to go on yet in this new format so player quotes can be useful to mine.
There’s certainly a line of logic that says New York are the bet here having already played one match and presumably banked a few useful lessons.
Wyndham Clark was on the Bay GC team that beat them and the former US Open champion noted: “It’s not necessarily pure golf, there’s a little bit more game and trick to it.”
But he did add this. “I will say we had a lot of fun. I feel like no-one had more fun out there than us.”
Chemistry could be a key factor as teams settle into the format and, looking at Tuesday’s game, Atlanta would seem to have more of it.
Justin Thomas loves the trash talk and dynamics of team golf and it shows up in his record.
He should love this too, given how he likes to create shots around the green.
Billy Horschel has missed out on previous American Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup teams so will be keen to show what he can bring.
And, again, beyond pure golf, Horschel loves to talk, loves to chat and should vibe off his teammates.
Patrick Cantlay is a lower-key character when being judged in interviews but he forms bonds well when inside a locker room.
Add that to some strong current form, a steely determination in match play and he should make a big impact.
The three Americans look a close bunch and perhaps you can’t quite say that of Fowler, Fitzpatrick and Young.
Fowler likes the big show, but Fitzpatrick can be a rather reserved Englishman while Young really does seem to be an introvert.
Atlanta looks the deserved favorite so back them at -125 with bet365.
