It wasn’t looking good for New York Golf Club in the TGL.
They were blasted 9-2 by The Bay Golf Club in the new indoor league’s first ever match and then suffered a 4-0 shutout at the hands of Atlanta Drive.
But the trio of Rickie Fowler, Matt Fitzpatrick and Cameron Young responded last time out, thumping Tiger’s Jupiter Links 10-3.
A fast start was key. New York won the first three holes and never looked back.
They were 8-0 in front at one point before eventually hitting double figures.
Hopes of making the postseason are now alive again.
For Los Angeles, after wins over Jupiter Island (12-1 no less!) and Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common (4-3), they were all set to stay 100% after leading Atlanta Drive 5-4 with three holes to play in last week’s tripleheader.
But Atlanta rallied and scored a 6-5 Overtime victory to hand LA its first loss.
The good news for Los Angeles was that it remained top of the SoFi Cup standings, the Overtime loss earning a point and taking the leaders’ tally to five.
But it did knock them off top spot in the outright betting.
Ahead of Monday’s double header, Los Angeles is now +260 second best with bet365 behind The Bay Golf Club at +220. New York is +750.
Boston Common plays Atlanta Drive in Monday’s second game at 9pm.

Yes, you’re right to scratch your chin and try and recall if you’ve seen Finau play in previous TGL games. He hasn’t. Finau makes his debut here after signing a one-match contract. Why? LAGC’s English duo Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood have pre-existing commitments and are unavailable. “I’ve watched many of the TGL matches these past six weeks and I’m looking forward to be a part of it. Team golf is always fun and exciting,” said Ryder Cup/Presidents Cup veteran Finau, who has hit a real patch of form after 13th at Pebble followed by fifth at The Genesis Invitational in his last two PGA Tour starts.
Morikawa isn’t a golfer to take things lightly and he’s had his game face on in the TGL. It’s shown by his unbeaten record so far in four Singles matches. Out on the main PGA Tour, the double major winner has been in strong form. Morikawa was runner-up in the season-opening Sentry and 17th at both Pebble Beach and The Genesis Invitational.
Do we think Theegala likes the TGL? “I love this team,” he said after last week’s playoff loss. “I have so much fun being out here. This is the most fun golf I've played in a really long time. So just fires me up to be with these guys, and I'm already looking forward to the next one.” A 17th at Torrey Pines last week - his best result of the season - will put him in good heart for this.

Young didn’t play in New York’s opening defeat so he’s 1-1 after being on the losing side against Atlanta but helping his team to victory over Jupiter. He shared his two Singles with Tiger, both winning a hole each. His form on the PGA Tour is also somewhat hit and miss. He’s had top 12s at The Sentry and Phoenix but that’s mixed with two MCs and a 72nd.
Fitzpatrick has been chugging along on the PGA Tour with 48-MC-49 his last three finishes although he did say after New York’s first win that felt he was hitting the ball better. The bottom line though is that he’s yet to win any of his four Singles matches and changing putter for that match - something he never does - suggest he’s searching for something.
Fowler won one and tied one of his two Singles in the win over Jupiter and this is part of a busy week as he’s playing in a pro-am at Jack Nicklaus’ Bear Club Monday, coming to play TGL and then gearing up for the first leg of the Florida Swing, the Cognizant Classic. It helps that he lives by PGA National and can sleep at home. He’s yet to score a top 20 in four PGA Tour starts this season.

The margins are thin in this format so sometimes it’s the little things that add up and make a difference.
New York was on the ropes but switching its intro music and coming out hard changed their fortunes after two humbling losses.
Sending out the same winning squad of Young, Fitzpatrick and Fowler gives NYGC a chance to build on last week’s win but will it be enough?
Beating Jupiter Island was a boost but Tiger’s team has now twice had double digits put on them. Whisper it but Jupiter may be the weakest side in the TGL.
Finau’s presence brings fresh energy to LA and although he needs to adjust to the format and set-up, it shouldn’t be a problem.
The other advantage for LA could be Morikawa going up against Fitzpatrick in Singles.
Morikawa is unbeaten (2-0-2) while Fitzpatrick is still seeking a first win.
I’d also give the edge to Theegala over Fowler.
Final point, Los Angeles has clear incentive as victory guarantees a playoff spot.
LA is a marginal favorite at -125 with bet365 and gets the vote.
