It’s 3rd v 2nd in the second Playoff season semifinal and the first meeting between this duo went to the wire, with The Bay Golf Club edging out Atlanta Drive 6-5.

That formed part of The Bay’s opening sequence of four straight wins which secured a postseason spot although its bid to go 5-0 in regular season play was undone with a 5-3 loss to Los Angeles Golf Club in the closer.

That defeat dropped The Bay out of the No.1 spot.

Atlanta also lost just once in the regular season and rounded off its campaign with a dominant 9-1 win over basement dwellers Jupiter.

For the right to play either No.1 Los Angeles Golf Club or No.4 New York Golf Club in the three-game Finals Series March 24-25, the betting is tight.

Format

• Each match consists of two teams of three playing 15 holes across two sessions on a selection of custom-designed holes

• Triples: Holes 1-9 - Each team of three playing in alternate-shot format

• Singles: Holes 10-15 - One-vs-one, head-to-head competition for the entire hole. Each player from each team plays a total of two full holes

• Both Semifinal matches feature the same course layout.

Justin Thomas

Thomas comes in off a wild ride in THE PLAYERS Championship where he crashed to a 78 in round one but roared back in style, shooting 16 shots lower and matching the course record of 62 on Friday. A pair of 73s on the weekend left him 35th. In TGL he’s been a charismatic presence and leads the league in Strokes Gained: Putting and feets of putts made. If JT is on it, he’ll be hard to stop.      

Billy Horschel

It was a fair guess that Horschel and TGL would be a strong fit and so it’s proved with Billy-Ho bringing plenty of energy to the SoFi Center. He’s delivered too, helping Atlanta rank 1st for Holes Won (11) and Points Won (18) in Singles. Horschel, who started brightly at Sawgrass before fading, has been a monster in Singles racking up a league-best eight points. 

Patrick Cantlay

The quiet man of the Atlanta team and he’s been a little quiet too in terms of scoring. Cantlay has won just 10 points in 41 holes so the heavy lifting has been done elsewhere. He’s played some pretty decent golf on the PGA TOUR this season with a couple of top fives but Atlanta will need more from him here.

Shane Lowry

Lowry didn’t play in the regular season game against Atlanta Drive but his match-up against Thomas here should have plenty of Ryder Cup vibes to it. Don’t underestimate how much these guys want it. The Irishman was runner-up at Pebble Beach and seventh at Bay Hill so he’s been impressing on the PGA TOUR.      

Wyndham Clark

Clark has been a stud in TGL. He leads the league in holes won, points won and Strokes Gained. But The Bay’s star presence has doubts hanging over him after he pulled out of THE PLAYERS Championship with a neck injury. That was in round two when he’d slipped to four-over. Watch this space as his presence could be key to the outcome.

Ludvig Aberg

Aberg has won 15 points out of 30 in TGL so far and contributed plenty to the positive vibe around The Bay. A missed cut at THE PLAYERS was a surprise misstep but he was a brilliant winner of The Genesis at Torrey Pines two starts earlier and the extra two days off may just make him sharper for this.

The Bay Can Book Finals Spot 

After a narrow 6-5 scoreline in favor of The Bay in regular season, this was always going to be tough to call.

It’s made even harder by the doubts (at the time of writing) about Wyndham Clark given his performances so far.

But whether Clark suits up or not, I’m still siding with The Bay.

Their strength as a team is shown by performances in Triples.

They rank 1st for Holes Won (17), Points Won (21) and Strokes Gained Total.

In fact their tally of +16.2 SGT in the latter category is more than double that of any other team.

While Atlanta are super-strong in Singles, individual head-to-heads are perhaps more volatile.

If The Bay can hold its own in Singles - Aberg to beat Cantlay is a bet I like - that could decide it.

And one final point, note that all four of The Bay’s most successful holes in TGL are being played in this match.

Fine margins like that may just decide it.

I’ve said this several times before in these previews, don’t be surprised if this goes to a playoff.

After the TGL opened with three convincing wins, five of the final 12 regular season matches were decided by a single point.

That includes the previous game between this pair which could have gone to overtime had Thomas’ 22-foot eagle putt on the final hole dropped.

It should be a fun night in the SoFi Center and if you want a scoreline prediction, I’ll take The Bay to prevail 5-4.
