And so here we are at the Final Series of the inaugural TGL.
It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable first season for the new indoor tournament, proof that golfers can have fun, trash talk and still take their sport seriously in a wildly different format.
Winding back to January, six teams went into battle and Atlanta Drive GC and New York Golf Club were ranked fourth and fifth in the betting.
But here we are in late March and it’s those two who will contest the final.
Both were the lower seeds in their respective semifinals but New York shocked No.1 seed Los Angeles 6-4 before Atlanta (3rd) crushed The Bay (2nd) 9-3 a day later.
Match 1 in the SoFi Center gets underway at 9pm EST Monday, with Match 2 taking place 7pm Tuesday. If a third match is needed, the decider will follow straight after Match 2.
Not surprisingly, both teams are going with the line-ups that secured victory in the semis.
It makes sense. Triples is a key part of this (see rules below) and chemistry plays a big part.
As for prize money, it’s pretty eyepopping. The winners bank $9million, with the runners-up securing a still hefty $4.5m.

Atlanta Drive GC | New York Golf Club |
---|---|
Player 1 - Justin Thomas | Player 1 - Cameron Young |
Player 2 - Billy Horschel | Player 2 - Rickie Fowler |
Player 3 - Patrick Cantlay | Player 3 - Xander Schauffele |
Each match consists of two teams of three playing 15 holes across two sessions on a selection of custom-designed holes
Triples: Holes 1-9 - Each team of three playing in alternate-shot format
Singles: Holes 10-15 - One-vs-one, head-to-head competition for the entire hole. Each player from each team plays a total of two full holes
Both Semifinal matches feature the same course layout.
Thomas has been one of the absolute stars of the show in TGL, both for his play and his energy. No-one has holed more than his 108 feet of putts and he’s T1 for putts made of 12 feet or longer (four). Thomas has contested 10 Singles matches in TGL and not lost any (5-0-5) which is some feat. He also ranks T3rd for greens in greens in regulation. He arrives for Match 1 with fire in his belly after finishing runner-up in the Valspar Championship when seemingly having it in his pocket with a few holes to play.
Horschel has brought the intangibles with his energy and drive but also delivered the numbers. He leads the league in Singles Points (8) and that’s helped his team win more points than anyone (38) over the season. On the PGA Tour, he’s coming in hot after his best display of the season: tied fourth at the Valspar Championship.
Cantlay may come across as the quiet man but he’s formed a tight-knit and killer partnership with Thomas and Horschel. And he really stepped up in the semifinals, hitting his tee-shot to four feet on the par-3 12th after the Hammer had been thrown. That secured Atlanta’s passage to the finals. Cantlay has been sneakily impressive on the PGA TOUR so far, with two top fives and 12th at Sawgrass last time.

Young was part of a New York team that lost its first two matches and didn’t appear to have the necessary chemistry to thrive in this atmosphere. He also lost both Singles in the semifinals but he’s certainly played a part in New York being one of the best units in Triples. His PGA TOUR form is a concern though with four missed cuts and 61st in his last five starts.
It was always a no-brainer that Fowler would like the format but he’s more than delivered in the SoFi Center, playing a big role in helping New York come alive at the ideal time. He ranks 2nd in TGL for putts made, has hit more fairways than any player from either side and is 2nd in SG: Ball Striking. Fowler was NY’s star man in the semifinal win over LA and notched up a top 20 at the Cognizant Classic two starts ago.
Schauffele has been a frustrated spectator for a chunk of TGL after recovering from injury but he could have a huge role to play here, especially in Singles when taking on great friend and Ryder Cup partner Cantlay. The double major winner’s return to the PGA TOUR was low-key after 40th at Bay Hill and 72nd at Sawgrass but he warmed up for this with a fast finish 12th at the Valspar on Sunday.

The betting says Atlanta Drive will be crowned champions at the SoFi Center Monday night and I think that’s a fair assessment.
Atlanta has been outstanding in Singles and holds the psychological edge here too having whitewashed New York 4-0 in regular season play.
Of course, NYGC has been transformed since then, that dramatic improvement showing up in the overall Strokes Gained stats.
New York was -6.7 for SG in its first two matches but is +17.6 in its last four.
But I still think this goes back to Singles and I’d take Atlanta to win that department, with in-form Thomas a strong pick to get the better of out-of-form Young.
Horschel v Fowler and Cantlay v Schauffele are harder to call but Cantlay is my pick to overcome his great buddy Schauffele.
And when it matters most, chemistry counts for something just a little extra in a Finals Series and that will help Atlanta in Triples too.
So, Atlanta Drive gets the nod with Thomas perhaps emerging as this inaugural edition’s MVP.
Whether it takes them two games or three, back Atlanta to hoist the silverware at -138 with bet365.
