In recent years there has rarely been a Solheim Cup that has not provided drama, excitement, and sometimes controversy.
In short, this match between the best women golfers of the United States of America and Europe is the most anticipated, most thrilling and most watched showcase in women’s game.
In last year’s match Europe retained the Cup in astonishing fashion and celebrated with wild abandon.
Yet in reality the result was a tie rather than a victory - and the American captain Stacy Lewis was not happy about it.
Lewis has remained captain for this year, as has the European captain in 2023 Suzann Pettersen.
Last month Lewis said: “It has felt like unfinished business. It’s worked out nicely that Suzann and I are both coming back. I’m sure she feels differently but I feel like it’s time to settle the score.”
It looks like we’re set for another thriller. Who will take the honors? Let’s find out.
Year | Winner & Score | Top-Scorer, Team & Points |
---|---|---|
2023 | Tied 14-14 | Carlota Ciganda (Europe) 4 |
2021 | Europe 15-13 | Leona Maguire (Europe) 4.5 |
2019 | Europe 14.5-13.5 | Celine Boutier & Georgia Hall (Europe) 4 |
2017 | USA 16.5-11.5 | Anna Nordqvist (Europe) & Cristie Kerr (USA) 3.5 |
2015 | USA 14.5-13.5 | Charley Hull (Europe) 4 |
2013 | Europe 18-10 | Caroline Hedwall (Europe) 5 |
2011 | Europe 15-13 | Sophie Gustafson (Europe) & Morgan Pressel (USA) 4 |
2009 | USA 16-12 | Gwladys Nocera (Europe) & Michelle Wie (USA) 3.5 |
2007 | USA 16-12 | Paula Creamer (USA) 3.5 |
2005 | USA 15.5-12.5 | Annika Sorenstam (Europe) 4 |
In all 18 matches USA has won 10 and Europe 7 with one tie
USA won eight of the first 11 matches
Europe has won four of the last seven
A European has top-scored (or been tied top-scorer) in nine of the last 10 Cups
The last seven matches have started with Friday morning foursomes - Europe has won the session four times in that period and USA just once (4-0 last year)
The host is the Robert Trent Jones GC in Gainesville, Virginia
Brilliant in the first half of the year (five wins in seven starts) chaotic in midsummer (taking a 10 and a 7 on par-3s) Korda rediscovered her mojo in the AIG Women’s Open and should be a key performer for Team USA. She has a fine Cup record of 7 wins, 4 losses and 1 half, but will be desperate to win the Cup itself for a first time.

When the Swede made her debut last year her captain showed significant faith in her abilities by playing her in all five sessions and also asking her to lead out the singles. She won 3 and lost 2 of those matches to justify that faith and is likely to be asked for a repeat this week. She won the Scandinavian Mixed this year for a second time - an event played by both men and women.

Put very simply, the finale last year wrote the team talk of Stacy Lewis.
She just needs to remind the players what it felt like to watch a team that didn’t beat them celebrate like they had.
Of course, the team needs to pull its socks up and perform but there is every reason to believe they can. Lewis worked well with Lexi Thompson and Meghan Khang, Lilia Vu and Rose Zhang will be better for a second outing, Jennifer Kupcho is in better form and a fine team player, and Korda is the World No. 1.
The galleries are also expected to be overwhelmingly in favor of the home team - almost no tickets have been bought by Europeans.

Stacy Lewis said of Solheim Cup first-timer Lauren Coughlin: “She is probably playing the best golf of anybody on tour right now.”
The stats back that up.
She ranks fourth for birdie percentage this season (only Nelly Korda is better on either team) and fifth for bogey avoidance (the best of all 22 players this week).
The former makes her a great option for fourballs, the latter is ideal for foursomes.
She is one of four rookies this week and she is in the best form, has the strongest game and is most likely to play most matches.
Back her to end the week Top Rookie at +125 with bet365.

The markets rank Charley Hull, Georgia Hall, Celine Boutier, Linn Grant and Leona Maguire as Europe’s top players this week.
Hull, Hall and Boutier have all struggled in the last two Solheim Cups and while Maguire has been brilliant she is in poor form.
Grant is in the best form of all and was strong in last year’s match.
Back her to top score for Europe at +500 with bet365.
