Despite its relatively short history, this event loves a change of name/sponsor.
It started out in 2007 as the Fry’s Electronics Open, with Mike Weir taking the title by a shot.
Since then it’s been the Frys.com Open, Safeway Open and Fortinet Championship.
And just as we were getting used to the Fortinet (2021-2023), a new sponsor is on board again so welcome to the Procore Championship!
The good news for bettors is that the venue and place on the calendar remain the same.
This is the first event of the FedExCup Fall series - a run of eight tournaments that allow players to win titles and/or improve their ranking in the FedExCup standings ahead of the start of the 2025 season.
The mention of Weir above has relevance as the Canadian will be captaining the International team in the Presidents Cup in Montreal in two weeks’ time.
Six players from that 24-man line-up tune up here: Corey Conners, Mackenzie Hughes and Min Woo Lee from the Internationals and Sahith Theegala, Wyndham Clark and Max Homa for Team USA.
Theegala and Homa (twice) just happen to have won the last three editions of this event.
Winning scores have ranged from 16-under to 21-under over the last five years so plenty of birdies are usually needed.
Year | Champion, nationality, winning score and venue |
---|---|
2023 | Sahith Theegala (United States) -21 |
2022 | Max Homa (United States) -16 |
2021 | Max Homa (United States) -19 |
2020 | Stewart Cink (United States) -21 |
2019 | Cameron Champ (United States) -17 |
Silverado Resort (North Course) has hosted for the last 10 editions
It’s a par 72 and measures 7,123 yards yards from the tips
The course features narrow fairways and Poa annua greens
Chesson Hadley holds the 18-hole record at Silverado, a 61 in 2017
Sahith Theegala and Stewart Cink (267) hold the 72-hole record there
Theegala’s fellow local Californian Max Homa won this event back-to-back in 2021-2022 so why not Sahith in 2023 and 2024? The 26-year-old had marked our cards that he was a likely winner here by finishing sixth in 2022 and 14th in 2020 and this column took the hints and tipped him for the win 12 months ago. He’s in hot form for his defense after finishing third in the TOUR Championship at East Lake.

Like Theegala, Clark will want to get sharp for the Presidents Cup. But, unlike Theegala, his course form here is only so-so. The 2023 US Open champion has teed it up five times at Silverado with finishes of 43-30-MC-MC-33. Better news is provided by current form showing 8-13-7-14 and a win in California earlier this season at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Excitement levels will be through the roof for Conners as he preps for a Presidents Cup on home Canadian soil. His form here is a little patchy with two missed cuts in four attempts but 13th place in his penultimate visit in 2019 came via a final-round 65. Conners, who finished ninth in the Paris Olympics, was 22nd at the BMW Championship last time.

There are several reasons to back Sahith Theegala to defend his title this week.
Those twin staples of course form and current form build the bedrock of the argument for the man who shares the 72-hole course record here after shooting 68-64-67-68 to win by two last year.
The California connection - Theegala was born in Orange County - also jumps out given that five of the last six winners here were golfers from the Golden State.
But another reason is karma.
At the TOUR Championship two weeks ago, Theegala called a penalty on himself for illegally brushing sand away from his ball with his club while in a bunker.
It was virtually impossible to see even with slow-motion replays but Theegala felt something wasn’t right and made the call, later saying: “I felt like I moved a few grains of sand for sure.
“I’ve played so much golf. You kind of just trust your intuition and gut.”
In the end the two-shot penalty cost him an incredible $2.5million dollars - the difference between his eventual third place and the tied second he would have claimed without the infringement.
“I’m paying the price for it, and I feel good about it,” Theegala said later, a clear conscience meaning more to him than the significantly extra purse.
So, how about some good karma in return?
If that’s going to kick in, this looks the perfect venue for it to do so.
Back Theegala for the win at +1150 with bet365.

Tom Hoge to beat Harris English is the 72-hole match bet selection this week in a -110 pick ‘em at bet365.
Hoge has a solid record here with five finishes of 37th or better in his last six visits and that includes 12th on his most recent appearance in 2022.
He’s also something of a California specialist having finished eighth and sixth in his last two starts in the Golden State while his one PGA TOUR win came at nearby Pebble Beach in 2022.
English did manage ninth here in 2022, his first top 30 in six Silverado starts, but here’s a stat: he hasn’t had a top 40 on American soil since May.
Hoge was 13th at the BMW Championship two tournaments ago so looks to hold the stronger hand in both current and course form.

Short game is rewarded at Silverado and that brings Presidents Cup-bound Mackenzie Hughes into the crosshairs.
The Canadian has two top 20s in his last four starts on the PGA TOUR and a 13th and a 25th at this venue.
Back him for top 20 at +220 with bet365.
