After his near miss in the PGA Championship, Bryson DeChambeau proved that he is back to his very best with victory in last week’s US Open at Pinehurst, the second major title of his career.
The 30-year-old was a little fortunate that Rory McIlroy experienced a last green meltdown but take absolutely nothing away from him: He was magnificent all week and, especially, with his penultimate shot, a superb fairway bunker shot that he later called “the greatest of my life”.
Few would disagree that it was one of the greatest played by anyone.
It was the culmination of an on- and off-the-course transformation of the Texas-based player.
On the course, he carded 61-58 to close out LIV Greenbrier last August and two starts later he carded a final round 63 to win LIV Chicago.
That form drove through to this year’s Majors.
He was the halfway leader in the Masters, second in the PGA Championship and now he is a two-time US Open champion.
Off the course, he has used his YouTube channel to connect with fans and turn from a socially awkward to a social media star.
Who will take the honors this week? Let’s find out.
The course is a par 71 that plays to 7,297 yards
LIV Golf CEO Greg Norman was the course architect
McCrory Creek and a series of man-made ponds provide the water hazards
There are generous fairways and the greens feature run-offs
The course has hosted three editions of the Korn Ferry Tour’s Simmons Bank Open
Mito Pereira is the only man in the field with a course top-20 finish
There is no doubt that DeChambeau will be feted and celebrated all week so the big question is how much that distracts him or will it inspire him to another win? The big concern would be his record on Norman designs. He’s played them seven times and has managed just one top 20 with a best of 14th. For a golfer of his quality that is poor.
Bet on Bryson DeChambeau (+700) at bet365
The Chilean was a slow starter on Norman designs but his last five starts on them read: fifth, fifth, 11th, first and third. His last start on LIV ended with a very poor 77 in Houston but he is a two-time winner on the circuit this year (albeit the second of them came back in March).
Bet on Joaquin Niemann (+800) at bet365
How fit is the Spaniard after he had to withdraw from last week’s US Open? It’s a valid question because he has a sensational record on Norman designs. He’s won three times at Jumeirah, once at Vidanta Villarta and was third at El Camaleon on LIV debut. In his last eight starts on a Norman course he has never once finished outside the top five.
Bet on Jon Rahm (+1000) at bet365
Throughout this year the Spaniard has drifted in price as his quest for a first win since the 2023 Masters has failed to bear fruit.
In the last month, he’s had to deal with frustration and injury, as well as that win drought.
An infected foot forced him to withdraw from LIV Houston and then drop out of the US Open.
He posted a photo of himself on Instagram watching the third major of the year and that experience ought to have stirred his juices.
Given his fondness for a Norman test he really does have a great shot this week and the fact that he has drifted in price makes him a valid each way option.
Snap up the +1000 each way at Caesars Sportsbook which pays five places.
This week’s price for the Pole Adrian Meronk is based more on his major championship performances this year (three missed cuts) than his regular tour activity.
He started 2024 on the DP World Tour where he finished second in the Dubai Desert Classic.
Since then he has made eight starts on LIV and recorded six top 20 finishes.
Moreover, just two weeks ago he was second at LIV Houston.
Now he rocks up to a Norman design and he has form on them.
He’s finished 11th at Al Mouj in Oman and, in Dubai, eighth on the Fire Course at Jumeirah and seventh on the Earth Course at the same venue.
You can back him at +3300 each way with bet365 which pays five places.
Winning back-to-back might be beyond Mexico’s Carlos Ortiz but he can thrive again.
Last time out he landed a first LIV victory in Houston but it wasn’t his first win of the year - he also lifted the trophy in February’s Asian Tour International Series Oman at Al Mouj and, as we’ve established, that’s a Norman track.
He’s also finished second at Norman’s Emerald Bay in the Bahamas and twice second at El Camaleon in Mexico.
Back him to land another top 10 with bet365 offering +130 that includes ties.
