LIV Golf Team Championship Dallas Intro

After Jon Rahm won last week’s LIV Chicago (as predicted in this column), and with it LIV’s individual championship, it is time for the teams to take center stage.

The top three teams in the year hold an advantage (as explained below) and they are:

• The defending champions Crushers GC captained by Bryson DeChambeau

• Individual champion Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII

• And Cameron Smith’s Rippers GC

In short, that is three powerful teams led by three of the five best players who play on LIV

The other two of those five top dogs are Brooks Koepka (Smash GC) and Joaquin Niemann (Torque GC).

It is expected that one of those five teams will claim the victory.

But who are the best bets this week? Let’s find out.

The Format

The top three teams in the rankings after the regular season gain byes into the second round. The other 10 teams will conduct the first round. The fiver winners join the top three seeds in four knockout matches.

In both of these first two rounds there will be two singles matches and one foursome contest to determine the winner.

The final four teams standing will play strokeplay on Sunday when all four scores count and the lowest combined score wins.

There is a total of $50 million up for grabs with the winning team taking home $14 million of which $5.6million goes to the four players and the rest to the team.

• The course is a par-72 playing to 7,567 yards

• It was designed by Steve Smyers and Patrick Andrews

• Smyers has a reputation for creating tough layouts

• Two of the four par-5s stretch over 600 yards

• Water features on 11 of the 18 holes

• There is a distinct prairie backdrop

Contenders to Win the LIV Golf Team Championship Dallas

Legion XIII (+275)

Captain Jon Rahm has been awesome all year and has two wins in his last four starts. Tyrrell Hatton was fourth last week, Kieran Vincent and Caleb Surratt are capable of good golf but do perform below the level of the stars more often than not.

Crushers GC (+320)

Bryson DeChambeau has played his best golf in the majors in 2024 but will be up for this week. Paul Casey has had a solid year, Charles Howell III is back from injury but not firing on all cylinders yet and Anirban Lahiri was sixth last week.

Aussies like Texas and this is an all-Aussie ine-up. Cameron Smith was a very poor 52nd last week, but Lucas Herbert has back-to-back sixths, Matt Jones is a rock solid performer and Marc Leishman was fourth on his penultimate start.

DeChambeau Can Crush It

There is only one market this week: the outright.

We’ll take one team from the favorites to win and add an each way option.

Having that bye is obviously an advantage to the top three teams: they have to win one match rather than two straight. But they still cannot afford a bad day.

Legion XIII have the best combined average over the last year but in Texas both Rippers and Crushers better them.

Aussies do have a good record in the Lone Star State but Smith is an exception and his lack of a top 50 last week is a worry.

Bryson DeChambeau is very excited about this week - he lives in Dallas and is friends with the host course’s billionaire owner (they bonded over a love of physics).

His team will also be up for the week – and they all have very good records in the state (especially Howell III).

Torque Can Torch Texas

The Latin American team of Torque actually has the best combined average score in Texas.

Captain Joaquin Niemann has only two top 10s there but he is very solid and in the best form of his life.

Carlos Ortiz is a resident of Dallas and has won twice in Texas.

Sebastian Munoz had twice been third there.

And Mito Pereira has never missed a cut in the state with a best of seventh.
