The next three weeks are set to be massive for LIV Golf.
It kicks off with a return to southern Spain for a tournament that was a rollicking success when it was won by the American Talor Gooch last year.
The famous Real Club Valderrama is the venue and it is a genuine treat - a tight, tree-lined test that features one of Europe’s iconic holes, the par-5 17th that features a dangerous lake in front of the green.
The tournament is the last chance for British Open-bound players to get themselves ready for the final major championship of the year and afterward LIV stays in UK for a visit to the JCB Club near Manchester.
Who will take the honors this week? Let’s find out.
Year | Player and Score |

The par is 71 and the course will play to a yardage of 6985
The course architect was Robert Trent Jones Sr.
It is famously tight from the tee featuring cork trees off the fairways
Depending on set-up and weather, it can be a brutal test
Sergio Garcia is a three-time course winner
Ian Poulter, Graeme McDowell, John Catlin, and Talor Gooch are also course winners
It’s been a sensational year for the American. In the majors he’s finished sixth in the Masters, second in the PGA Championship, and then won the US Open in memorable fashion. In addition, he was an impressive third in his last LIV start in Nashville. He was second at Valderrama last year, carding a scintillating 63 in the second round.
Bet on Bryson DeChambeau (+600) at bet365
The big Spaniard visited Valderrama as a boy, scouting for the autographs of his heroes and he was a little over-awed on his first start at the course but he was second there in 2019 on the DP World Tour. He’s been frustrated by poor form since last April and by injury at the start of last month but he was third at LIV Nashville and will be desperate to find form for the Open.
Bet on Jon Rahm (+700) at bet365
One of the hottest players in world golf ever since November last year with victory in the Australian Open and another two wins in LIV, success in the majors continues to elude the Chilean but he was third at LIV Nashville last time out. He was 10th at Valderrama last year and has also been eighth at the RTJ Sr. designed Wilmington on the PGA Tour.
Bet on Joaquin Niemann (+1000) at bet365
When Brooks Koepka finished third at this event last year it was far from the biggest surprise.
On the one hand, he rather likes Spain - admittedly it was only on the second tier but in three previous visits he’d won twice.
More importantly, perhaps, he loves a test designed by RTJ Sr.
His first encounter with one was at CordeValle on the PGA Tour in 2013 when he led by two after 54 holes and finished the week third.
Five years later he won the PGA Championship at Bellerive, carding a third round 63 and two weekend 66s to triumph by two shots.
And last year’s third place could have been so much better, but for a slow start.
Like Rahm, he’ll be desperate to end the majors of 2024 on a high and should be backed.
Snap up the +1800 each way at Caesars Sportsbook which pays five places.
John Catlin might be the best American golfer many fans have never heard of.
The 33-year-old has won six times on the Asian Tour, including twice this year.
He is also a three-time winner on the DP World Tour, including in the Andalucia Masters at Valderrama in 2020.
He was also in contention (only losing in extra holes) all last week on the Asian Tour in Morocco - at another RTJ Sr course, Royal Dar es Salam.
Called up to play LIV last month he was seventh in Nashville and spent the first 36 holes in the top three.
He can maintain the challenge this week.
You can back him at +5000 each way with Caesars Sportsbook which pays five places.
Let’s stay on trend and add another RTJ Sr expert - and he’s Spanish.
David Puig finished third at Royal Dar and 15th at Madinaty in Egypt in 2022, fifth at Valderama last year and he won at The Mines in Malaysia this year.
That’s 3-for-4 at landing a top 10 so the numbers are on our side.
Back him to land another top 10 with bet365 offering +240 that includes ties.
